The School of Toronto Dance Theatre
Since September, our gifted faculty have enjoyed working with returning students, as well as a whole new group of energetic and enthusiastic first year dancers, and our third year dancers have recently finished an inspiring two week residency with Peggy Baker Dance Projects. As you read this, we are in our final preparations for our fall mainstage show, IMPULSE 2016. All of the dancers are working towards the performances with tremendous dedication and eagerness.

Looking ahead, we are excited to host our first January audition in Fredericton, New Brunswick, led by Darryl Tracy and Andrea Roberts, and in this newsletter, we are delighted to profile students, graduates, and alumni from that province. Our talented third-year student, Moncton native Vanessa Chiasson, is one of the recipients of our bursaries supported by the generosity of Lindy Green and Sam Chaiton. Syreeta Hector (2009 graduate), hailing from Quispamsis, NB, has been tremendously active on many fronts since she left the PTP, and recently choreographed and performed in a new web musical series. We are also pleased to feature Andrew Hartley (another Moncton native), and Emma Kerson (from neighbouring Nova Scotia), who are not only graduates, but stalwart members of our Young Dancers’ Program faculty. Their upcoming fundraiser, The Waiters Throw a Sock Hop, will benefit their anticipated performances in February. I hope you enjoy reading about these accomplished individuals, and look forward to seeing you at IMPULSE 2016.

On Valentine’s Day, 2014, Andrew Hartley and Emma Kerson (2011 graduates) formalized their ongoing work together in the creation of their collective, Common People – a name they chose to celebrate “looking at the commonplace or everyday and finding what’s incredible about it”. Their upcoming fundraiser at Barreworks on Saturday, November 26th will include their work The Waiters: The Process Revealed: A Tragi/Danci-Comedy, along with short works by other graduates of the School.

Native of Moncton, New Brunswick, Vanessa Chiasson is currently in the final year of the Professional Training Program at the School – an integral part of our diverse and lively class of 2017. Having started to dance at the tender age of two, Vanessa feels lucky that she had fantastic opportunities to train and dance growing up in New Brunswick: “We had access to great programs in and around the Moncton area – studio dancing, concerts, and competition dance, you name it. There were also opportunities to showcase and perform for the community.” Read more about Vanessa Chiasson.

Syreeta Hector is a 2009 graduate originally from Quispamsis, New Brunswick. She trained initially at the Port City Dance Academy, in Saint John, and later completed the Teacher Training Program at Canada’s National Ballet School. After graduating, Syreeta began to teach at Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre, and one day she happened to watch Pat Miner teaching a technique class there. Pat’s class inspired Syreeta to attend the School of TDT, and after her graduation, she was taken straight into Toronto Dance Theatre, where she stayed for five seasons.
