NOPDA 3On Farm Energy Solutions highlighted at Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance pasture walk
On Thursday, Sept 29, Siobhan Griffin hosted 45 NODPA participants at an informative and interactive field day on her Raindance Farm in Schenevus, NY during the NODPA 2011 Farm Field Days, in which she highlighted practical solutions to reducing energy usage on the farm.  Sunlight is becoming Siobhan’s primary energy source for powering not only the energy-intense electrical demands of her dairy but for providing nutrient-rich feed during the growing season.  Siobhan relies on perennial pasture as a substantial part of the daily nutritional needs of her cattle, and solar panels as a source of low-cost energy to power the farm.
Griffin took advantage of a REAP grant for her 13.44 Kw system, which has so far reduced her energy bill by one-third, and she anticipates as much as a 100% reduction in energy costs when the farm is fully converted to solar.  Griffin’s system had a total cost of $80k, which is around $6 per watt.  NYCERTA paid $1.50 per watt and the REAP grant paid $20k for a system that has a lifetime of at least 20 years, but 40 or more years lifetime is not unheard of with these systems.  Griffin paid $12k out of pocket for a system that has an estimated $2500 in electrical value per year, as solar produces at peak demand and no taxes or transmission costs are incurred.
Be sure to look for more details on the NODPA farm field days in the winter edition of PCO's Organic Matters.
