Meet Miss P.

Miss P. is 21 years old and the eldest daughter of 4. Her mother died of AIDS in 2006 and her father "escaped" the family abandoning them to be raised by their elderly grandmother. Miss P. and her family survived on subsistence farming. Unable to pay school fees, Miss P. was often sent home, but due to her dedication to her studies, she persevered...cleverly.

“I confess that sometimes when I was sent home to bring fee balances, I would hide in school and my friends would render me their equipments like meal cards though it was illegal but all this I was doing it just keep my self in school in order not to miss lesson.”

At age 12, Miss P. cared for her dying mother both at home and when hospitalized.

In the hospital she learned another harsh lesson; one of the many horrific faces of nursing shortages.

“I was helped by the nurses but due to their being too few in number they could not help her...”

This is when her passion for nursing began and her wish to, “Contribute to the nursing care of the people in my country."

Now she has been accepted into a three-year diploma program at Nsambya School of Nursing and Midwifery in Kampala, Uganda.

We are so proud of our new Gretta Scholar.
