 About the Production

Opera Parallèle is proud to present this powerful opera, performed by a cast of exceptional singers. The role of Anya will be sung by Anna Noggle, whose portrayals have been described as “sensitively drawn and heart-achingly sung” (Opera News). Our Viktor is baritone Victor Benedetti, lauded by the Chicago Tribune for his “confident and commanding stage presence and strong, dark baritone”; Anya17 will also feature local favorites mezzo-sopranos Catherine Cook (OP’s own Julia Child in La Bonne Cuisine) and Laura Krumm, soprano Shawnette Sulker, and tenor Andres Ramirez (whom OP audiences enjoyed in Trouble in Tahiti and Ainadamar).

Gorb’s music in this opera was described by London critic Paul Driver as “a marvel of boisterous inventiveness, albeit with a savage snap.” It brings to mind two of OP’s past productions, with musical affinities to Wozzeck (2010) and Ainadamar.(2013). Ben Kaye’s bold and accomplished libretto also shares common ground with these two works.

We promise a compelling night in the theater as the creative team of Opera Parallèle, described by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Joshua Kosman as “quickly becoming one of the Bay Area’s indispensable cultural assets,” shines its full power on the sensation that is Anya17.
