SUNDOWNER Premiere

kage_183_lr_pg 2

KAGE's newest work SUNDOWNER will be premiering at the Castlemaine State Festival on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd April 2011. A dance theatre work about memory, love and family.

Imagine this....

It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the difference between the present and the past, between what is familiar and what is foreign. Events that took place just minutes ago are being constantly erased, while memories that you have been able to keep at bay for decades now come rushing towards you.

Despite the explorations of poets, novelists, doctors, scientists and philosophers, the realm of memory remains a great mystery. KAGE, in partnership with Alzheimer's Australia, invites you into this intrigue.

This breathtaking performance traverse sorrow, fears, humor and dignity. Through the eyes of three generations, SUNDOWNER tells the stories of so many Australian families.

If a loved one starts to lose thier memories, what role can we play in holding on to them? And if our parent is no longer the person we know, how can we care for them in the present and also honour their memory?

SUNDOWNER is a story of lament and at times grief and sorrow. Ultimatley, though, it is a story of love: love of family, love of history, and love of life.

Anniversary Celebrations and Program Launch

  Programfor KC

On the 22nd February 2011 KAGE celebrated our one year anniversary at the Abbotsford Convent in the the previously unused and secret space - the Convent Laundry. This space is yet to be renovated but represented the possibilities of what is to come - quite fitting for KAGE. CEO Maggie Maguire shared some kind words, enthusiastically speaking about the anticipation that is building around SUNDOWNER and KAGE's history of association with the Convent.

Michelle Armstrong from Arts Victoria spoke of their continuing support and also about KAGE's journey so far. Michelle was first introduced to KAGE when she was General Manager of Next Wave, and she and Zane Trow programmed No (Under)standing Anytime as part of the Festival in 2000.

Nigel Edwards, KAGE's Chair also welcomed David Doherty OAM, KAGE's leading KAGE Companion. David will act as a mentor and guide and seek ways to encourage the private and corporate sector to support the Company.

Co-Creative Director Kate Denborough talked through the 2011 program and the inspiration behind seeking out collaborators as diverse as Paul Kelly, Helen Morse and Michael Leunig.

Thanks to everyone who attended and thanks to the Convent Bakery for the food and drinks.

It Happened to Me

As part of the broader Castlemaine State Festival Program, Helen Morse and Tivoli Lovely - Vicky Charleston (both performers in SUNDOWNER) will be stepping up to the microphone to tell it like it is in Stories From Backtage, part of the It Happened to Me series, on Saturday 2nd April at 9:30pm.

The show behind the show - the unseen works of theatre as experienced by the artists themselves. For one night only you wil be privy to the world of work, machinery, anxieties, egos, disasters and triumphs, as played out behind the proscenium arch and beyond.

Get to know a KAGE Creative

DO2

This month we want to tell you a little bit more about dancer Michelle Heaven.

Michelle is currently working with KAGE as a performer in SUNDOWNER. But before we even premiere SUNDOWNER in April, Michelle will be presenting her own work Disagreeable Object at Dance Massive in Melbourne in March. What better way to get to know an artist than by seeing their work?

Reminiscent of an old silent film in it's style and execution, this bizarre and beautiful work sees Michelle in an unforgettable "pea de deux" with Brian Lucas (Brian performed in KAGE's 2008 work Appetite).

Melbourne DANCE MASSIVE Season:
16-19 March 2010
