Last month saw the opening of the Gloucester Heroes Bridge in Paju, South Korea. It is the largest foot suspension bridge on the Korean peninsula and spans a gorge on Kamak-San, close to the Glosters lines during the Battle of the Imjin River. The Korean people have named it in honour of the men of the ‘Glorious Glosters’ in recognition of their sacrifice 65 years ago. As we approach Christmas, there are lots of things happening at the Museum and in the Docks that may be of interest.

Our Special Exhibition on the Battle of Somme will be continuing over the next few months. However, the Victoria Cross group awarded to Carton de Wiart, CO of 8th Bn during the Somme will be returning to the National Army Museum in a couple of weeks. If you haven’t been in to see them, and the exhibition, it is well worth a visit. Read more about the amazing de Wiart here:

The annual Victorian Christmas Market is being held over the weekend of Nov 17-19. Why not combine a visit to the Market with a trip to the Museum. In addition, there will be an ice-rink in Orchard Square for the next two months. If you purchase a skating ticket, you will receive a substantial discount to the Museum!

Another interesting item on the market that the Museum has been pleased to assist with is a limited edition of the military Series 1 Land Rover, produced by the Corgi Vanguard range of classical vehicles. The Series 1 was issued to the 1st Bn. Glosters and taken to the Korean War in 1950. The shop link here gives the background to the Battle of the Imjin River. This model would make an ideal Christmas present.

We have some exciting plans for 2017 and look forward to updating you further in the next couple of months.
