Sarasota County Commission Meeting Notice - Barrier Island Issue
On September 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. the County Commission will reopen discussion on Ordinance 2008-084 which regulates the ability of barrier island property owners to remodel or improve their properties. The meeting will be held at the County Building, 1660 Ringling Blvd., in the first floor Commission Chambers. At issue is an interpretation by the Sarasota Building Department that existing properties must have 19.4 feet of elevation to be outside of the 50% rule. The 50% rule restricts the amount of improvements to no more than 50% of the current assessed valuation of the property and such improvement is cumulative over the lifetime of the property. SAR has not taken a position on the issue at this time, but wanted to inform members who might have an interest in attending the meeting.

Other enticements include cool gulf breezes; clear, temperate, turquoise water; and huge discounts on accommodations from July through September at luxury high-rises, cozy cottages and funky beachfront bungalows.
