A compromise between merchants and Sarasota officials means special event fees will go into effect but that collected revenues will get directed to the parts of the city where major events normally take place.   City officials say fees from events held around St. Armands Circle or downtown Sarasota will be directed appropriately to the St. Armands Business Improvement District and Downtown Improvement District

50-percent rule

SARASOTA- Frustrations about whether Sarasota County officials are fairly applying the 50-percent rule on waterfront developments is driving many business leaders to press for changes in development rules.   The 50-percent rule limits the ability of many homeowners on the barrier islands to renovate ground-level homes. Because of federal rules discouraging building in flood zones, additions to homes cannot be valued at more than half the value of the home.

Warchest Building for Ringling Festival in 2010

SARASOTA COUNTY - Organizers for the Ringling International Arts Festival took major steps Tuesday toward guaranteeing $500,000 in additional funding to repeat the successful event next year.   Manatee County Commissioners set aside $250,000 to fund the festival, so long as Sarasota County officials do the same. Later in the day, an ad hoc committee recommended Sarasota officials do just that. The special Festival Steering Committee voted 5-3 in favor of directing $250,000 in tourist development tax to back the RIAF next year.

Palm Avenue Garage Update

SARASOTA - The team recommended to construct a parking garage on Palm Avenue tossed in the option of a banquet hall or similar facility on the top floor. But Sarasota’s Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board did not rally behind that plan.   The board did unanimously recommend the garage plan from Jonathan Parks Architect and Suffolk Construction to City Commissioners, sans the addition. “To put this structure to any use besides parking could be incredibly problematic,” said CRAAB member John Harshman.

Unconditional Surrender Sarasota

SAN DIEGO - From a distance, the 26-foot "Unconditional Surrender" statue here looks like its copy in Sarasota, including the stream of admirers mimicking the celebratory kiss.

But the similarities between the two copies of J. Seward Johnson's much-loved, much-ridiculed statues end there.

For a backdrop, Sarasota's statue has a few sailboats. San Diego's has an aircraft carrier.

The giant statue has drawn some scorn in this Navy town -- art critic Robert Pincus of the San Diego Union-Tribune called it "monstrous" and "kitsch" and a fair share of his readers agreed.

LONGBOAT KEY - The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort will reopen today after a two-month hiatus and despite some problems with termites that drew a town inspector there on Thursday.

Katherine Moulton, the resort's president and general manager, said late Thursday that John Fernandez, the town of Longboat Key's interim building inspector, found nothing that would prevent the Colony from reopening as planned.

"We're good to go, and very excited," Moulton said.

LBK_Club1 (WinCE).jpgLONGBOAT KEY - An ambitious plan to expand the Longboat Key Club & Resort Islandside passed its first major hurdle Thursday when the town's Planning and Zoning board narrowly approved the project.

The advisory board supported the $400 million expansion on a 4-3 vote. The final decision rests with the Town Commission, which has scheduled its first hearing on the matter for Jan. 8.

 Proscenium Developer Apologizes

 click_here_md_wht.jpg

SARASOTA - The developer of the Proscenium real estate tower has apologized to a series of downtown land owners stung financially when the 18-story project failed.

Developer Zeb Portanova stopped short, however, of taking responsibility for the $1 billion Proscenium's collapse.

"People have lied and stolen from me; I trusted groups that were contractually committed to me, and tried to keep the project alive, based on those commitments," Portanova wrote in a late November e-mail.
