Dear Friend,
Happy Holidays from Mayatan! The days since Thanksgiving break have been full of preparations for Christmas, the New Year, and upcoming vacations. We have lots of wonderful news to report in addition to the holiday cheer. Mayatan hosted its first U.S. high school student participants in Learning Abroad at Mayatan, we were visited by a famous shoe-donation program, and our previous campaign to sponsor Fernanda Sofia was a great success. If you haven't yet given to Mayatan this year, there is still time to donate online or via mail. It makes a great gift for a student who needs help, families in Copán, and in honor of someone else. You can give once or monthly in amounts starting at $10. Every penny helps us continue to change lives through education. As you read this email, many of our teachers will be packing or en route to the airport for trips back to the U.S.A. Others will be traveling closer to Honduras. Our students and their families will be decorating, shopping, and getting in touch with relatives to plan their gatherings. Wherever they go, and wherever you are, we wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holiday, and an amazing New Year! Sincerely, Your friends at Mayatan Bilingual School Legacy of LoveOn December 9th, Mayatan performed its second annual Christmas Musical, "Legacy of Love." The entire project was a work of love, from the translation of the words and lyrics into Spanish by Diana Rivera and Marisol Welchez, to the direction of actors and choir. All that hard work paid off in the end. The packed audience was treated to a touching tale centered on a high school teacher missing his wife at Christmas-time, his students, and a missing laptop computer. Most touching and impressive were the parallels between the performance and real life at Mayatan. The entire production skirted the border of fact and fantasy: performed by Mayatan students in uniform, set at Mayatan School and in Copn, and using real life video footage. "Legacy of Love" ended with a true loving gesture when the actors thanked Mr. John Weber for all of his help. It was a great way to kick off the holiday season. After running a brief campaign to sponsor her scholarship, we've found full support and more for Fernanda Sofia. Thanks to all of you for your help spreading the word and collecting funds. We're especially grateful to former Mayatan teacher Olivia Ungerer and her sister Rachel Greszler. Olivia and Rachel agreed to become sponsors for Sofia, covering the balance on her scholarship once other donations were taken into account and paying for fees like food and transportation! [Full article] A First: Learning Abroad at Mayatan We've had 20-something to 60-something volunteers from abroad since the early days, but this year Mayatan instituted something different. In November, we hosted our first participants in Learning Abroad at Mayatan. Two high school seniors from Ohio spent three weeks living with Mayatan families in town and volunteering in first and second grade classrooms. This cultural exchange was a terrific experience for both the foreign students and the school. Marc and Genna became inseparable from their 11th grade host brothers and sisters, Annie and Eduardo, and the four had a host of adventures in and around town. The LAM participants also bonded with their students, who loved the energy they brought to their classrooms and physical education classes. Moreover, all had the satisfaction of knowing that the proceeds from LAM go to support scholarships at Mayatan. [Full article] Mayatan Can DanceThe entire school had an exciting diversion and an unexpected lesson in physical education in November when 5th grade teacher Ivy Berg brought Danish tourists Nikolaj and Peter up to campus. The duo from Denmark happened to be trained in acrobatics, dance, and education, and they spent a full day, from 7am to 2pm, treating Mayataners of all ages to a day of hip-hop inspired moves. [Full photo.] Walking with LoveMayatan enjoyed a joint visit from Honduran non-profit Caminando con Amor (Walking with Love) and their famous international counterpart, TOMS Shoes. They were going to just donate to scholarshup students but, rather than single them out, every child who wanted one got a pair of the fashionable footwear. [Full story.] Alumni NewsAspiring film and TV producer Gabby and agriculture student Alvaro are two Mayatan graduates who are building terrific futures. After Mayatan, Gabby won scholarships to study in Tegucigalpa and Florida. Alvaro is at Honduras's prestigious Zamarano school. If you're a Mayatan graduate and would like to appear on our Alumni page, or if you're just interested in staying in touch with the school, contact us at info@mayatanfoundation.org. |
