Director's Update:
A brief and heartfelt thanks…
by Brian Magee, Executive Director, MNA

This month’s column will be short and sweet. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the kind words and the many well wishes regarding my departure from MNA later in the year. It reminded me in a very real way that what I’ll miss most about Montana are the people. And there isn’t a close second. I’ve always said that it was the natural beauty – the rolling plains, mountains, rivers, glaciers, and streams - that brought me here, but it was the gracious, kind, and genuine people that kept me here. There’s no place like Montana.

Over the past fifteen years working in the state (eight with MNA), I’ve been so fortunate to work with some of the most incredible individuals one could ever hope to know. Your wisdom, guidance, dedication to your work, and love for Montana and your communities, have all contributed to building MNA into one of the strongest state nonprofit associations anywhere in the country. That foundation will carry this organization forward under new leadership to new heights. There’s no doubt about it.
It is my sincere hope that I’ll have the opportunity to see or talk to all of you before I leave to personally thank you for your service to this great state and MNA. You deserve every ounce of gratitude that I could send your way. To that end, I hope that you will join with me in celebrating MNA’s 10th Anniversary at our upcoming Annual Conference in Billings (September 28-30th). It will be a grand event that will have special meaning on many levels. It will be a lot of fun too.
If you have questions about the transition, please do not hesitate to contact me at MNA.

BoardSource Nonprofit Governance Index 2010
Check out this much awaited Governance Index and see how your Board compares with others. Since BoardSource began collecting data on governance in 1994, growing attention has been paid to good board policies and practices, especially in the last decade. Since the last Index came out in 2007, nonprofit boards have dealt with global recession and the new IRS Form 990 requirements. Our boards have stepped up on both accounts, with increased personal giving and adoption of more accountability policies. The findings tell us that nonprofit leaders' profound passion for their organizations and the continued quest for better boards has not changed. Read
