MANAGING FIBROMYALGIA

Oct 20, 11                                                                                     #18

HI Everyone!

You are correct in noting that the November and December issues of the Managing Fibromyalgia Newsletter are missing. That is not to say that nothing was going on, it just means that other things took precedence. A rather nasty case of shingles took over the last part of Nov and first part of Dec, and so all my Christmas shopping was squeezed into a little two week period. On the plus side, it gave me a whole new idea for an article titled,  "When the Unexpected Happens While You Have Fibromyalgia."  (Coming soon.)

But before "all that," on November 3rd, I was interviewed on Blogtalkradio by Elisabeth Oas. Listen to my interview. In 2011 Elisabth Oas, The Pelvic Messenger, was named The National Patient Advocate for The International Pelvic Pain Society (IPPS).

And after "all that," on Jan 3rd 2012, I was honored to be the interviewed guest on The Harvest Show, on WHME, ch 46. To see the YouTube exerpt, click here. To see the show in it's entirety go to the archives at  www.harvest-tv.com > Show Info > Video on Demand > Jan 3, 2011.

Now I'd like to get back to my list of my top 7 favorite and most effective supplements. Let's assume that you eat wisely, that is, you eat foods that provide actual nutrition for your body, OR that you are at least taking a good multivitamin to help offset any lack of trace minerals, B-vitamins etc.  Then the top seven are: Omega 3 EPA-DHA, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Malic Acid, Alpha Lipoic Acid, 5-HTP and Eleuthero. There are more helpful supplements to be sure, but I consider these the basics necessary for chronic pain management.  These 7 cover muscle pain, nerve pain, stress, depression, energy, anxiety, antioxidant needs and more. In September, I spoke of Omega 3. In October, I spoke of Magnesium. This month it's Vitamin D. So here we go!

Please remember that each person is different and not everything will work for everyone, just like prescriptions. Please consult your Health Care Provider (HCP) before taking any supplements. Please tell your HCP of any supplements you may be taking.

Fibromyalgia and the Power of D

Even if you don't surf MedicineNet.com NIH.gov, PubMed.com, WebMD, Dr Mercola's site or Dr Weil's site or any other medical site, you've probably been hearing a lot about Vitamin D in the past year or two.

It's on NBC Nightly News, in the AARP Magazine, Prevention Magazine, Women's World, Science News, Discover Magazine, etc!

And what are they saying? We probably need more of it. We definitely need to have our HCP check our levels of Vitamin D. They are finding that many people are extremely low in this very necessary vitamin/hormone, especially if you live north of the Mason-Dixon Line; especially if you are over 50; especially if you have a dark complexion, especially if you have a chronic illness; especially if you don't get outside  for at least 15 minutes, 3 or 4 days a week, 365 days a year. We need Vitamin D3 (not D2). And they are finding more and more benefits than they had ever realized. More benefits every day.

In the July 16th 2011 issue of Science News, there was an excellent article titled "The Power of D." Doctors and scientists were speaking on the subject and citing the latest medical studies for D's importance in bone health, heart health, immune system- viral infections, upper respiratory infections, etc- depression, asthma, eczema, allergies and more. It has even been found to make a huge difference in persons with Multiple Sclerosis, according to Dr. Jorge Correale of the Raul Carrea Institute for Neurological Research in Buenos Aires.

In the same article, Michael Holick, a biochemist and endocrinologist at Bostion University, spoke of studies demonstrating its effectiveness in treating cancer - ovarian, breast, colon, prostate and more! It turns out that "...vitamin D regulates tumor-suppressing proteins...and triggers other proteins that inhibit cell proliferation." His book, The Vitamin D Solution (2010)  expounds on the many benefits of this vitamin/hormone.

A study cited in this article told of ."..elderly people in England who were low in Vitamin D were at least 40 percent more likely to fail standard cognitive tests than those with high levels of the vitamin." (Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology, 2009 report).

Adrienne Dellwo's site, one of the very best sites for Fibro info,    tells that a deficiency of Vitamin D is linked to chronic pain, muscle weakness, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases and more. She tells a story nearly exactly like mine. I had been on the low end of the scale while taking 1,000 IU of D for years, and STILL stayed low. I am now taking 4,000 IU every day in the summer and 6,000 IU every day in the winter. I am now at a reasonable 60 ng/ml and maintaining.

At WomenToWomen.com Naturopathic Physician Marcelle Pick has a very helpful article, which includes the importance of Vitamin D for depression! We are all familiar with the term Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), but we tend to think of it in terms of far northern latitudes, like Alaska, Northern Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands etc. Not necessarily so - it can happen anywhere. Dr. Pick tells of the inverse relationship of Vitamin D to Melatonin, and of the warm, soothing effect of sunlight - just ask a cat whose found a beam of sunlight to doze in! She lists symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency - muscle pain, weak bones, low energy, low immunity, depression, mood swings & sleep irregularities.

Dr. Mercola refers to Michael Holick's book cited above and also tells of 24 different conditions that are helped by making sure your D levels are up to par. Then he recommends a "par" of 50-70 ng/ml...for healthy people. I wonder what he would recommend for chronically ill people. (?)   At the bottom of this page is his article, "How much Vitamin D do you really need to take?"

I'd also like to bring to you attention an article by Dr. Jones of the Women's Health Institute of Texas. Her article is a unique point of view and may very well be something to be considered for specific individual circumstances. She states: "If you have Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or any type of pain- no matter what the cause- you might ACTUALLY be suffering simply from a Vitamin D Deficiency or a combinaion of any one of many REAL fixable problems..."  I have a problem with her term "REAL." I alos feel that this is a rather simplistic point of view. But this view may well explain the particular instances we hear about like, "I cured my Fibro, You can too," and "Fibro cured in one week," and "Buy this juice and your Fibro will be cured."  I bring you this site because it's good to hear all sides of a theory. This way you are enabled and can choose - make up your own mind.

According to HolisticOnline.com,  it is possibe to harm yourself if your dosage exceeds 100,000 to 150,000 IU per day for many months. An overdose can be toxic. And there are precautions as told on WebMD. Some conditions exist where Vit D should only be taken under a doctor's care. Because Vitamin D promotes Calcium absorption, it is NOT recommended to add excess Vitamin D if you have hypercalcemia, for exmple, because it will increase your calcium absorption even more! This same recommendation comes if you have Kidney Disease, hardening of the arteries, Sarcoidosis, Histoplsmosis, an over-active parathyroid or Lymphoma.

* For current information from the Federal Government on the safety of a

particular dietary supplement check the "Alerts and Advisories" section

of the NCCAM website  at "News Alerts."

Sources for Vitamin D are: For normal folks sunshine creates Vitamin D. But if you are chronically ill, this system seems to malfunction and such a small percentage of the vitamin/hormone is created tht it appears to be negligible. But sunshine is still good for mood & depression. Get outside in the sun whenever you can! It puts a smile on your face!

Supplements: Vitamin D supplements come in softgels, tiny sublingual tablets, capsules and liquid (drops). It is available everywhere - Wal-Mart, CVS, Rexall Drugs, Walgreens, grocery stores and all health food stores.

Foods containing Vitamin D include:   Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, cheese, egg yolks, fortified foods like  milk, cereal and baked goods listed as being fortified. Cod Liver Oil is also a good souce for Vitamin D, but be aware of getting too much vitamin A in your diet along with it as an overdose of A is NOT adviseable.
