Sheen Loses Lustre
It's taken a while - and 5000 souls in Detroit paid hard currency for confirmation - but Charlie Sheen is not very good at Big Audience Speaking, or terribly funny, when he's not scripted. How unsurprising.
In Sheen Loses Lustre I go into a bit more detail, highlighting his three big mistakes. If you ever get up in front of a group at a pitch, seminar or conference you should have a look at it. Look too at Gordon Brown's You Tube disaster and Barack Obama's terrific vote of thanks.
A few months ago I worked with a senior management team of ten: seven hours on strategic networking, influence and persuasion and the six ways to deliver a pitch. Exemptore Speaking from beginning to end. Day two was a few weeks ago. One of the team cornered me at lunch and asked me to deliver a session for his troops. He admitted he had tried to deliver the training, having been at my first day and read the notes, but it hadn't worked. I think he bombed. How unsurprising.
He basically found out the hard way that it takes a lot of preparation to make what you do look effortless. Bob Hope once said that we should all have 25 Stories. But the stories you tell down the pub, or in the chat-show chair, don't translate when there is a big live audience waiting to be entertained.
It's all about the Science of Preparation and the Art of Delivery. And Humour? That's the Holy Grail.
