 Russell Wardrop on Oratory

Little Britain: Yes But, No But...

The country needed a vision from David Cameron as he closed his Party Conference last week. We needed our leader to show he knows where he is going. We needed a leader to show he knows how we can get there. From an oratory perspective we needed clarity, focus and power. Something vaguely Churchillian, if that was not too much to ask.

The work "leadership" was used 16 times in this one address: how many times do you think Churchill used the L word in platform speeches from 1939 to 1946?

What David Cameron delivered was essentially a long list, as if all his focus groups had pitched in and he felt he had to read the lot. This keynote was not good enough for the occasion and brought to mind nothing more than Vicky Pollard of Little Britain. Yes but no but it did. Infact, the Prime Minister's poor effort inspired me to write an insight on Focus: Not Hocus Pocus. And lest you think this is a partial political comment, read my earlier review of Gordon Brown's YouTube disaster.

David Cameron is a good performer when debating; but this was not a debate, it was a keynote.

On this evidence he needs to find much better material...
