Your drawing in the spot light – competition for children in family and friends care

Family Rights Group 40th anniversary

We are a charity founded in 1974 by social workers, lawyers and families in response to the injustices experienced by many parents involved with social services (now known as children's services) and the unnecessary separation of children from their families.

This year we are launching a 40th fundraising appeal – including holding various events – and we need your help.

We have had some important successes over the last 40 years.
For example, 40 years ago parents were NOT:

  • legally represented if their child was subject to care proceedings;
  • included in their child's case conference, if there were child protection concerns;
  • invited to reviews if their child was in care.

Now they are

These achievements are in large part due to us consistently bringing evidence of injustices to the attention of politicians, practitioners and the media, and putting forward workable solutions in the interest of the child.

But we are needed now more than ever.

The 40th anniversary appeal

We are inundated by families contacting our advice service for help – an increase of 70% in the last two years. Currently we don’t have funding to answer 6 in 10 families trying to call the service.

Domestic violence is now the main underlying reason why families contact us. Increasing numbers are impoverished mothers, whose children are subject to child protection enquiries as a result of witnessing domestic violence. Even if they wish to leave with their children, they often have nowhere to go.

Some families contacting us desperately need additional help following an initial advice call. Many are too scared, upset and fearful to navigate, alone, a system which can feel complex and overwhelming.

Monies raised from the 40th anniversary appeal will enable more vulnerable children to live safely and thrive within their families, rather than go into care by enabling us to:

  1. Advise many more victims of domestic violence and
  2. Provide follow-up advocacy support to families, by negotiating with the local authority and/or drafting emails and letters on their behalf.
By joining the Family Rights Group Supporters’ Network and making a donation, no matter how big or small, you can make a crucial contribution to our work. All donations make a difference, but it is the regular and consistent payments that provide continuing help to families in need of support. You are free to donate as much as you like, but this guide to how your donation can make a difference might help you decide on an amount.

In return for your support you will receive a 10% discount on our publications, training courses and events, an invite to an annual stakeholders’ meeting, regular newsletters and our annual review.
