Background
Last week, Senate Democrats (under the leadership of Senator Ed Murray) released their proposed version of the budget, which included
no cuts to higher education, and closed tax loopholes that benefit out-of-state megabanks. Over the weekend, Senate Republicans (with the help of 3 Democrats) rammed through an alternate budget without allowing a public hearing. This budget cuts higher education, K-12 education, and numerous state services. In fact, the higher education cuts in the new budget appear to target the 4-year Universities’ ability to provide tuition waivers.
In addition, lawmakers are currently refusing to vote on the Jobs Act, which can create thousands of jobs to have a positive, proactive effect on our economy (read recent editorials in the
Everett Herald and
Tacoma News Tribune).
