YPII Video Contest: A chance for young philanthropists to tell their stories!
The Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Indiana is celebrating its 10th Anniversary by hosting a monthly Video Contest for youth!
This is a great opportunity for kids to show everyone their philanthropic spirit and work and how they are making a difference in their community. The youth "voice" demonstrated through these videos can also empower other youth to begin a giving and serving project in their community.
If you are a parent, teacher or staff person with a youth–serving organization, encourage your youth to make a short 2-minute video and enter the contest! With just a 2-minute video kids can:
(1) win a monthly prize and recognition for their work
(2) encourage others to take part in their own philanthropic activity
(3) be eligible for the grand prize
(4) help get the word out about your program or organization.

Where Are They Now?
 Eric Hessel – Hendricks County
Your work today to engage youth to become involved with philanthropy can have long-lasting effects.
To prove that statement and as part of YPII's 10-year celebration year, The Where Are They Now? Series will feature individuals who have been influenced greatly by philanthropy programs they participated in as a youth.
Then: Junior High member of YES – Youth Enriching Society youth council member in Hendricks County
Now: NYU graduate and graduate student in philanthropy at IUPUI and intern at Hendricks County Community Foundation
Eric Hessel, of Hendricks County tells his story this month about what a difference his youth philanthropy experience has made.
"I was a lucky individual during junior high school. Lucky to have had such positive role models, two of whom still inspire me today: Deedee Daniels and Dianne Murer. I learned at a young age to never underestimate the power and influence of a mentor. These two women recognized in me something I did not even realize was there—passion, and to an even greater extent—compassion.
In a time period during which most students are focused on themselves, their influence taught me the definition of philanthropy: giving of your time, talent, and treasures for the common good. And most importantly, it stuck. Together, along with other Hendricks County students, we created Youth Enriching Society (YES), a youth council at the Hendricks County Community Foundation. I also attended the YPII Jam in Franklin which enhanced my philanthropic experiences.
From junior high forward, there was no turning back. I was forever changed by these two women, who encouraged me to move beyond the mundane into the realm of philanthropy. I left Hendricks County for New York University, where I studied politics and worked for an art therapy organization.
Now, I am back studying nonprofit management at IUPUI and interning at the very organization that gave me my start in philanthropy. I have come full circle and I hope that, as we begin our youth council again, I can be a Deedee or a Dianne to local students."

YPII welcomes the Co-Coordinators, Joan Belschwender and Shirley Wright as representatives of generationOn to our YPII Partner Network. Joan noted a few highlights of generationOn:
- We offer a number of $250 grants available to support Indiana teachers in doing service projects with their students. This is a way for us to reach out and help schools to incorporate philanthropy into their curriculum.
- We are available to visit schools to demonstrate the resources available through our website and how they might be put into action, such a teachers' online institute in philanthropy (CEUs available), "Moments of Service," and relevant resources such as Disaster Relief and lessons for every age-group K-12. We ask that teachers and others register on our website and complete a School Information Sheet.
- We encourage usage of the philanthropic education lessons available through our website and feedback from educators is easily communicated through a Service Project Tracking Form.
Another connection that YPII has with generationOn on is that Eileen Ryan, YPII Program Director, is serving on the Learning To Give National Content Advisory Committee. This Committee will review and assess new classroom lesson plans, teacher support materials and briefing papers to make sure they are aligning with the philanthropic themes as defined in the Learning To Give curriculum framework. These lessons will be available on the generationOn website.
