Conference Programming Announced: Registration Now Open
Philadelphia Family Pride will host our 8th Annual Family Matters Conference on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9am-3pm at the University of the Sciences in West Philadelphia. This is the same awesome location as last year's event!
Registration is now open!
This one day conference is for LGBTQ parents, prospective parents, grandparents and our infants, toddlers, kids and youth of all ages.
The day will kick off at 9:30am with keynote speaker Heath Fogg Davis. His talk is entitled "Parenting Through the Bureaucracy of Gender."
Heath is the author of Beyond Trans: Does Gender Matter? (NYU Press), a book that offers practical guidance to individuals and organizations on how to develop trans-inclusive policies that are institutionally smart.
The conference will also have three workshop session blocks with five choices in each session. Highlights include:
- Multiple sessions for prospective parents on assisted reproduction, surrogacy, adoption and a screening of the documentary "Building Blocks" by PFP parent Laura Zaylea.
- Knowing Your Rights: Protesting and Police with the ACLU of Pennsylvania's Naiymah Sanchez
- Update from Harrisburg with Rep. Brian Sims
- Parenting workshops including "Maintaining Intimacy for LGBTQ Parents", "Adoption, Race and Privilege: Learning to Be Better Parents".
A complete list of workshop titles, schedules and presenters can be found here.
COLAGE will again be providing programming for kids and youth ages 7 – 14 years old. Older teens are welcome to join and help the COLAGE organizers with the elementary and middle school aged kids.
Child care for 0-6 year olds will be available on site, including a "Family Play Time" session with PFP board member and CHOP social worker Greg Hedler.

PFP Summer Fun in August
August was full of fun PFP get-togethers. Trans and genderqueer parents met up in Clark Park on Sunday, August 6. Watch for more meetups for this group in the coming months.
On Saturday, August 12, PFP families gathered at the South Ardmore Park in Wynnewood, PA for our annual summer potluck picnic. There was a big Alex's Lemonade Stand event at the park at the same time, so the group got to partake in a lot of fun, extra activities and donate to a good cause at the same time.
The annual Camping Trip the weekend of August 18-20th turned into an unexpected adventure. After all the planning and preparation, we arrived to find a confederate flag flying out front of the campground and many confederate flag items for sale in the gift shop.
The group discussed the options and decided to leave and have dinner at a nearby restaurant (pictured below). Ultimately we let the campground know that we wouldn't be staying and why.
We headed home with very disappointed children but had a good opportunity to have some conversations about how doing the right thing isn't always the easy thing. Then some folks were able to make last minute reservations at a NJ state park and salvaged the weekend.
There are a few camping opportunities coming up for folks who were on this trip or for those who couldn't make the August weekend.
The Corraggio family will be camping at nearby French Creek State Park the weekend of September 9-10 and invite other queer families to join them. E-mail Jem at firstname.lastname@example.org to coordinate.
PFP families are also invited to join the DC Rainbow Families group at their annual camping trip November 10-12th at YMCA Camp Tockwogh in Worton, Maryland, about a two hour drive from Philly. See the group's Facebook event for more info.
Congratulations to PFP parents Nicole and Angel Molinari on their wedding. They were married on Friday July 28th at Aulettos in Deptford, NJ.
PFP parents Heath Davis and Samantha Korn and 2 year-old big sister Ty welcomed new baby boy Sasha Rey Korn on August 11. Congratulations!
Congratulations to PFP board member Greg Yorgey-Girdy, his husband Paul and big sister Bella on finalizing the adoption of Xander and Trevor on August 16th.
Diane and Kristin Ponist celebrated the adoption of three kids who they'd been fostering for three years on June 23rd of this year. You can read more about their families' journey on their blog: http://fosteringhopes.blogspot.com/.
