NOVEMBER 2017

Our Biggest Conference Yet!

nijah and adamPhiladelphia Family Pride held our 8th Annual Family Matters Conference on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the University of the Sciences in West Philadelphia. This was our biggest event yet with 140 adults and 35 kids in attendance!

The programming was geared around hearing from PFP parents - from our keynote speaker Heath Davis to parents who shared their stories, insight and advice on everything from maintaining intimacy to their experiences with adoption and fostering to connecting with half siblings through the Donor Sibling Registry.

One PFP parent, Laura Zaylea, is a filmmaker and documentarian who is working on a Building Blocks interactive documentary to tell our stories, especially to prospective parents. The screening of segments of this film was very popular!

brian and groupIn addition to the parents, we heard from professionals and experts from attorneys to therapists to doctors to State Representative Brian Sims who gave us an update on LGBTQ legislation from Harrisburg and Naiymah Sanchez from the ACLU who taught a session on knowing your rights while protesting and interacting with the police.

Programming for kids 7 and up was provided by COLAGE and consisted of plenty of movement and play as well as discussions about identity mapping and representations of our families in the media.

Babies, toddlers and kids up to 6 years old had fun with the staff from St. Mary's Nursery School with special visits from a wizard (the massage and reiki therapist Thom Duffy) and a play time with PFP board member and CHOP social worker Greg Hedler.

sponsorTo round out the day, we had a fantastic sponsor fair with 20 tables of information for parents and prospective parents. Many thanks to all our sponsors - both those who weren't able to attend and those who were. See a full list of sponsors on our web site. Special thanks to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for stepping up to be our lead sponsor this year.

New this year, PFP hired photographer Kelly Burkhardt to take candid photos of the event and family portraits. Scroll all the way down to see a photo gallery of some of the shots she captured of the day.

Finally, we'd like to thank the University of the Sciences for hosting our event and announce that we'll be back there again next year on October 6, 2018, so please save the date!

PFP Fall Fun

PFP families have really done fall right with a Halloween themed potluck and apple picking at Linvilla Orchards. Thanks to all those who attended and hosted.

We also met up on a damp morning at Smith Playground. PFP Board Member Despina Kontos was prepared though - she brought towels to dry off the equipment for the kids to play! #ParentProTip
