When thinking of March, most people have thoughts of warmer weather, spring break & the start of baseball season right? Well, here's one more thing you should associate with March ...National Nutrition Month!

Obesity rates in the U.S. have skyrocketed over the past several decades. However, studies have found that it's not only what we eat, but how much of it we are eating. Over the past 50 years, portion sizes of everything from muffins to sandwiches have grown considerably...and American waistbands have expanded. With larger quantities of food becoming not only a norm but an expectation, our perception of what a typical meal is supposed to look like has been distorted.

When our grandparents ordered a coffee three decades ago, they weren't given as many size options- a standard cup of joe was 8 oz. Nowadays, most of us feel we don't get our money's worth unless the cup is at least 12 oz.; it's not unusual to see 32 oz. coffee cups, 4 times the size they used to be. Portion distortion can make it hard to understand what a "serving size" is supposed to be. For example, today's bagel counts as 3 servings of bread, but many of us would consider that one serving.

National Nutrition Month is a great time to take the opportunity to spring into healthy eating habits. Nutrition doesn't have to be scary. In fact, if you have the right attitude about it, nutrition can be fun! Simple, household items such as a CD, computer mouse, small light bulb, baseball, checkbook & a deck of playing cards can help you make healthy food choices. These everyday items can be used as a fun visual aid when it comes to choosing portion sizes. A CD sized pancake is equivilent to one serving of bread. A small computer mouse can be used as a portion guideline for a 1/2 cup of spaghetti. A serving from the vegetable group can be a spear of broccoli similar in shape & size to a light bulb. An orange the size of a small baseball equals one serving from the fruit group. A healthy portion of fish from the meat group can be compared to the size of a checkbook. A healthy portion of steak is equivalent in size to a deck of playing cards.

Even if your appetite says "supersize", you can choose to "visualize portion size" instead. Once you determine one serving or portion of your favorite food, it can be fun to match it with an everday item found in your home. Visualize portion size to help make healthy choices with the food that you love!
