Wednesday Auditorium Class

angerStudy2012

Next Wednesday 2/8 - "Destructive Anger"

Through April 2012, the adult auditorium study is, “Anger: Yours & Mine & What to Do about It” based on the book of the same name. The study provides a clearer understanding of human emotions and an incisive grasp of the biblical perspective toward anger. Our well-being depends on our ability to control our anger before it begins to control us.

Curtis will lead this week’s lesson:  “Destructive Anger.” Our website has the schedule for the entire study, the weekly class handouts, as well as the teaching slides posted in the page for that week's class located in the teaching archives--here's a link. Just go to the page and click on this week's date. These are posted in advance for those who attend via webcast.

New Wednesday Night Ladies Classthe-uncommon-woman

A new Wednesday Night ladies class starts this Wednesday, Feb 8. All ladies are invited to meet in the library beginning at 6:30pm (come straight in rather than assembling in the auditorium first). This class is a study of a book entitled, The Uncommon Woman, by Suzie Larson, concerning how we can be women who go against the grain of the common for the sole purpose of living a life of conviction.

Love Bear Workshop & Luncheon Is Tomorrow

The Love Bear Workshop is tomorrow (Sunday 2/5) immediately following the morning services in the MPR. If you signed up for lunch (Snappy Tomato pizza/pasta/salad), you will pay as you go through the line ($5 per person, children are free). Please email Frances Gross at bodymenders@comcast.net or call her at 865-705-9923 and let her know how many in your family will be eating by today, Saturday, February 4th. Don’t forget to bring a drink or dessert, plus a bag of stuffing!

Parents' Night Out

In honor of Love in the month of February, Highland View will host a Parents’ Night Out next Friday, February 10th from 6-11pm. The cost of this event is a minimal of $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child in your family. This will cover the cost of pizza for dinner, and our wonderful preschool teachers that will be providing care for your child while you enjoy a few hours off. Please sign up with Jackie Cornett or on the list posted outside of Levi’s office (Youth Minister) ASAP so that we may arrange enough teachers. Contact Erin Dodd with any questions, phone 804-0860.

Legacy of Love (LoL) Banquet

Highland View’s annual LoL will be Sunday, February 12, immediately following the morning service. All Highland View members are invited to come and honor members of our congregation who are 65 or more years’ wise. The food will be provided. We would like for all of our honored attendees to bring a photo of yourself as a youth when you come to the feast.

Christian Movie, "Courageous"courageousMovie

“Protecting the streets is second nature to these men. Raising their children in a God-honoring way? That’s courageous!” Everyone is invited to join us for the movie “Courageous” that will be shown here at Highland View, at no charge, on Sunday, February 26 at 4pm in the auditorium. Christian written, produced and directed, this film and the content reflects these values. However, because the movie follows four police officers, there are “police” scenes that show mild violence and drugs. The movie is rated PG-13.

Opportunities To Serve

TAWANAkidshe AWANA Store
Remember that the AWANA store (which provides incentives to kids to memorize verses) needs constant resupply. We have a list on the website LINK below and printed in the foyers—or just donate a few dollars. The club kids will be having another shopping day on Feb. 22. Be sure donations get to directly to Levi to assure they go to this effort. Plus, the AWANA effort is always eager to receive new volunteers to listen to the children recite the verses that they are working to memorize. See Levi Dodd if you are interested. Thanks!!

Preschool Needs Some of Your Recycling Items
The Preschool Enrichment Program (PEP) is doing projects and they need empty 2-liter bottles and blown out (used) light bulbs. Please give them to Jackie Cornett or drop them off at the Preschool office in the educational building entrance. Thank you for your support!

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat volunteers are scheduled to stay in our building March 6-24. If you can help to provide lunches or supper, please contact David Morgan.

Alpha House Needs
The Alpha House always needs household supplies such as toiletries, cleaning supplies, and paper products. Please pick up the list of needs in the foyers. If you would like to help supply some of these items, please bring them to the building, and put them in the basket in the front foyer. If you have unwanted coupons for any of the items on the list or related items, Alpha House would love to have them.  Another item on their wish list is a used canopy for outside on the patio. Thank you so much!

Alpha House Rummage Sale
It’s time to start an early “spring cleaning” of your house and storage areas so you can donate your unwanted items to the Alpha House Rummage sale. The sale is March 31 from 8am-2pm in the MPR. Donations will be collected March 25-30. Look for further instructions about where and when to bring your donations. If you would like to volunteer to help with the sale, please contact Loretta Rollins, Serina Olsen, or Vickie Haynes.

confessions

From the Heart of Curtis McClane

THE ONLY WAY WE CAN BE AT REST (3)

You may remember last week that we reflected again on the famous opening quote of Augustine’s timeless classic, Confessions. In Book I, chapter 1, paragraph 1 there is the following famous insight about human beings: “The thought of You (O God) stirs man so deeply that he cannot be content unless he praises you, because you made us for yourself, and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you” (Saint Augustine’s Confessions, translated by R. S. Pine-Coffin. 1961; 1983 reprint; New York, NY: Penguin Book Classics; page 21).

The phrase we want to focus on this week is: “because you made us for yourself.” In one short phrase Augustine has encapsulated rather succinctly the purpose for human beings. God made us for Himself. This implies at the following: covenant, calling, partakers of the divine nature, and love.

We are in covenant relationship with God through Christ. God made us for his own glory, and we participate in that glory when we surrender to Jesus Christ. This is why conversion is so powerful. It is relinquishing self to God.

We are called and chosen by God. This gives us our identity. God initiated this calling, and when we respond we are only returning to Him who made us.

We are partakers of the divine nature. Because God made us for himself, we are not surprised that New Testament writers remind us that we participate and partake of the divine nature. Our very soul yearns for the God who made us.

We are loved and beloved. The first reminds us that we are the object of God’s love, and the second reminds us that we stand every moment in the state of being beloved. That is who we are.

“Because you made us for yourself”--this has been the great failing of historic Christianity—religious movements and activities tend be self-centered and not God-centered. If we take Augustine’s statement seriously, then everything changes for the glory of God!
In Christian love, Curtis

This Sunday's Sermon

The Temptation of Jesus

20120205

I pray that your heart is warmed tomorrow morning as you assemble with brothers and sisters in Christ. It has seemed like spring this past week, and we have so many things to be grateful for! As we unite our voices in song and our hearts in prayer, we praise God and seek to encourage and be encouraged by one another.

Remember that our focus this year is: “Christ in us, the hope of glory.” Let us exhort and challenge each other to display Christ-likeness in all we do. Let us encourage one another to experience the presence of God and the risen Lord among us. And, let us continue reading our Bibles each week.

In Christian love, Curtis
