The Faces of Bellwether

Bill and Jasper

Bill and Jasper, Bellwether Resident

Bill moved to Seattle in 1995 and became an advocate for early grassroots movements addressing affordable housing, small business retention and community-oriented transit solutions. He worked on the East Coast in the 2000s and returned to Washington after suffering several heart attacks that landed him on disability.

Market rate rents in the Seattle area were too high for his limited income but he remembered Bellwether from his previous advocacy efforts and was able to find and move into an apartment at Stewart Court. Bill (and his dog Jasper) spend their days volunteering around Seattle and organizing community events within the building.

"Bellwether has given me the transitional place to get me back on my feet (and) ... has made it possible for me to rebuild my life."

Your financial support provides people like Bill with a safe, affordable home so that they can dramatically improve their lives. Please make a donation to Bellwether today and help us create housing affordability so that people and communities can thrive.

In just a few short months we will break ground at 1511 Dexter Avenue North. The building will have a mix of 71 one and two bedroom apartments and three live-work units. 1511 Dexter will serve low-income working people - and their families - in a neighborhood that has seen rapid rent increases.

Getting to this point has been a journey. Bellwether bought the land in November 2011 with assistance from the Washington State Housing Finance Commission's (WSHFC) Land Acquisition Program, we performed due diligence and neighborhood outreach throughout 2012 and 2013, and completed our building design concept work in early 2014. However, due to the scarcity of local funding, we were not able to secure public financing from the City of Seattle's affordable housing fund sources until late 2015. Thanks to the Seattle Housing Levy, we received an award this past fall for the critical funding to allow this project to move forward. Construction will take roughly 15 months, with a projected opening in Spring 2018.

Since Bellwether purchased the land five years ago, nine new apartment buildings have been built within a mile of where our new building will sit, with another five opening in 2016 - none of which are rent restricted. The opening of Bellwether's Dexter Avenue apartments will at last assure that some permanently affordable housing for Seattle’s workers is available in this rapidly-growing neighborhood on the eastern flank of Queen Anne Hill, and within walking distance of the commercial growth of South Lake Union.
