Becoming Invincible: Overcoming Fear Through Reason and Experience - John Beckett

We live in fearful times – or so we’re told. Politicians attempt to exploit our fears, while others claim fear is only an illusion and attempt to shame those who are afraid.

Sometimes fear is rational. Other times it’s not. Most times it’s a little of both, and that makes it really complicated. But through reason and experience, we can keep fear from controlling our lives.

In our 9:30 and 11:30 am Explorer Classes

Nursery (infant to Pre-K): Infants and young children are invited to our nursery for a time of play, discovery, nurture, and connection. If you are visiting for the first time, feel free to arrive early to meet our nursery staff and to spend time in the room (classroom number 4) with your child.

From the Leadership

What a joy is has been spending time with you over the last 10 days. I’ve witnessed your strong leadership, commitment, curiosity and joy. Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is full of life. New guests arrive week after week; looking for what this congregation has to offer. In the hubbub of congregational life, the interim ministry tasks begin:

  • claiming and honoring the congregation’s past, and healing its griefs and conflicts
  • illuminating the congregation’s unique identity: its strengths, its needs, and its challenges
  • clarifying the multiple dimensions of leadership, both ordained and lay, and navigating the shifts in leadership that accompany times of transition
  • renewing connections with available resources within and beyond the UUA
  • enabling the congregation to renew its vision, strengthen its stewardship, prepare for new professional leadership, and engage its future with anticipation and zest.1

There is a parallel process involved. Minister and congregation adventuring forward together which reminds me of my preparations for this adventure.  At times it seemed like an arduous task, boxes, paper, stacks of cherished memories and accumulated life, tripping me as I made my way through the maze of moving from Maine to Texas. While the excitement of change buzzed through our home, the reality of recognizing what is essential became apparent. Packing began at the surface and soon moved its way into deeper exploration. What I was accustomed to would be changing and a series of questions surfaced. What will I have room for? What will I need? What will I store for the future and what am I willing to let go of to make room for something new?

Upon arriving to my new home here in Texas, it became clear that what I had considered essential would not be arriving anytime soon. Over the following 16 days, until the moving van arrived, my re-evaluation began as I lived without the familiar items tied to my memories. As the days passed, my emotions transitioned from longing to freedom. The sense of frustration I initially felt about not having my familiar belongs passed and indeed when the moving van arrived and box after box was carried in, I began to categorize some of these once essential items as unnecessary stuff.

During our interim time together, I hope to understand what you feel is essential. What memories are intertwined with the traditions and culture of this congregation? What will be released for the freedom of something new?

Please consider joining one of the listening circles where we can begin this conversation. The sign up sheets are posted with several different dates available in the gathering hall or feel free to e-mail me to sign up. I hope you’ll consider sharing this time with me.

May your days and nights be blessed,

Rev. Donna Dolham

What's Happening?

Are you seeking spiritual and/or personal growth? Do you enjoy thinking about new ideas? Are you looking for meaning in your life? Have you sometimes struggled to find connection at DUUF? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are especially invited to sign up for a covenant group. Covenant groups meet twice a month. All are welcome to participate, regardless of membership status. This year we are exploring offering a daytime group and childcare for select groups. To be part of this enriching experience, watch the newsletter or Facebook for sign-up information. Questions? Email

An exciting opportunity for social justice is coming to North Texas this year! Sacred Fire UU is a social justice leadership program that allows small groups at local UU congregations to deepen their social justice commitment and share it with their congregations and communities! Participants will attend guided group sessions twice a month at DUUF and 2 weekend intensives at other locations in North Texas. The first intensive is September 21-23. Topics include social justice, racial justice, community organizing, and prophetic leadership. Because of the collaborative nature of the program, participants are asked to make a commitment to participate through the 2018-19 church year. Space is very limited! Please email for more information or to sign up.

Thank you to volunteers Guy Gray, Charles Ways, and Bobby Oehlschlager who have been watering the grounds. If you can help water occasionally, please email to sign up!

DUUF is hiring! Please share the news with our larger Denton community. We are looking for part-time teachers for our Sunday morning Upper Elementary class and for our Wednesday night Middle School youth group from outside of the congregation. Applicants for teaching positions must have an undergraduate degree in education, or comparable area, teaching experience in the grade levels for which they are applying, and able to articulate their approach to teaching, learning, and classroom management. Interested applicants should review the principles and sources of Unitarian Universalism to be sure they align with their own values, as well as review online sample curricula ( For more information, and to apply, visit or contact
