From Our Leadership
I was delighted to see so many familiar faces and new ones last Sunday at DUUF! The new school/church year is upon is and I am excited to share some of what we are looking forward to at DUUF.
This year will be our first full year of following monthly themes. Each month has a theme (September is Welcome, October is Courage, etc.) that Rachel, Dain, and I will use as a starting place for our worship services, Sunday classes, and covenant groups. Themes are offered from a collective called Soul Matters which provides resources to help us deepen into a shared focus. It also creates cohesion across our classes and services. If you are a Facebook user, you are invited to join the Soul Matters group (https://www.facebook.com/soulmatterssharingcircle/) to connect to monthly themes throughout the week (themes start up in September).
Tesa Morin and I are co-leading a Coming of Age group for high schoolers. Do you know a high school student who is ready to explore their beliefs/values and to deepen their understanding/awareness of self? This year-long Coming of Age series is open to all youth regardless of religious background, beliefs, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Be sure to share this information with parents/youth who might be interested in being part of this amazing journey.
Our Whole Lives (OWL) was a success last year and it is back this year! We will offer OWL for Grades 7 and 8 starting in the fall (dates TBA). Grades K-1 and 4-5 will be offered as week-long summer camp options in 2018. OWL provides age-appropriate education regarding sexuality, relationships, and health that is woefully absent from our public school abstinence-only curricula. To fill that gap, we invite any community members (even if they’ve never been to DUUF) to participate. Please encourage parents explore OWL at DUUF. Also share this article about the importance of comprehensive sexuality education: https://rewire.news/article/2017/05/19/the-high-quality-sex-ed-program-offer-churches/.
We are continuing our Covenant Groups for adults. If you are interested in meeting twice a month to share and connect with others, please let me know. Also watch the newsletter and Sunday morning announcements for more information. Buddhist Meditation continues and will shift to a new time starting 8/20.
We are also restructuring aspects of our membership and stewardship process which you will be learning more about at services in the coming weeks. I am very excited about these changes and I think you will love them too.
With so much going on, please be sure to read our weekly newsletter regularly and don’t miss weekly worship services. This is going to be our very best DUUF year yet! Here we go!
Love and light,
Rev. Pamela Wat
