A Reintroduction to Guide By Your Side, or: "So what do you guys do, anyway?"

Parenting is a hands on, in the trenches, up to your neck in it job, and it is never exactly the same for any two kids, not even siblings. That is why I had to figure out that I can bribe mine with Doritos but not stickers. That is why even the best advice never seems to apply perfectly to every child. That is why “What works for the child is what makes the choice right.”

For the struggling parents reading this newsletter, call or email us yourself. Getting support from another parent of a deaf or hard of hearing child can help lessen the isolation and fear that can come along with raising the first deaf person you have ever met, or even the second, third, or twentieth. We will connect you to a larger community full of other families experiencing similar challenges, as well as families who have survived those same challenges already. It is also important and affirming for both parent and child to meet successful deaf and hard of hearing adults and children.

For the professionals reading this newsletter, if you are working with a family struggling with a new challenge related to raising their deaf or hard of hearing child, get them in contact with Hands & Voices. Our Guide By Your Side program will offer them a free, trained, paid parent guide to help them find the information and resources they will need to be successful. We will never pressure them to take one particular road over another, but we will help them study the maps.
