Here Comes the School Bus - Climb on Board!

Every time September rolls around, I get into my "teaching mode." There is no doubt that the time period from September through June is also a prime business training period. Conferences, training programs, seminars and workshops are all vying for your professional attention. Many of these programs will require that you not only attend but you may also be one of the presenters. I would like to pass along to you a few valuable ideas for you to consider while pulling together your presentation:

Be a Storyteller
Engage your Audience
Educate
Entertain
Rehearse

Think about the best meeting you ever attended. Is there anything you could borrow from their successful model? What is your story and why are you unique? How can you bring your audience into your story? What knowledge can you share? Are you vibrant and energetic? Have you rehearsed – out loud? Listen to yourself.  If you were an audience participant, would you want to listen to your own presentation?

People learn under different teaching methods – visual/hearing, reading/seeing, and touching/doing. During an hour meeting, you need to incorporate all of those methods.  I saw how well this worked for my daughter when she was at the International Academy. The school operated on a “Block Schedule,” which meant fewer classes in a day but each at 90 minute intervals. To keep the intensity of the class subject moving along, the teachers had to change their format of teaching every 20 minutes. They couldn’t just let the students watch a video or listen to a lecture for the entire time block. They had to switch it up. They had to engage everyone.

Try this yourself at your next meeting and bring out your inner child. Remember kindergarten? We all loved story-telling, show ‘n tell and coloring. We are all children at heart and have a playful spirit. Bring that concept into your next meeting and see how everyone responds.

My last pointer:  Don't forget to breathe and smile!
