Walgreens Training Center Opens Doors to Opportunities

Pictured from left: Randy Lewis, Ivette Gonzalez, Melissa Donaldson, Mark Wagner and Roberto Chavoya at the Walgreens Training Center Ribbon Cutting on July 31, 2013.

Three years ago, a unique set of doors opened up new opportunities for young adults with autism. The Walgreens Training Center, a simulated Walgreens located inside Have Dreams' Evanston location, opened its doors to training young adults with autism how to set up displays, work the cash register, stock and organize shelves and other critical retail skills. Kris Johnsen, executive director of Have Dreams, lauded the collaboration as "bringing much-needed employment opportunities for young adults with autism in our community."

The idea for the training center began five years before its opening when Johnsen reached out to Randy Lewis, who at the time was Walgreens' senior vice president for supply chain and logistics (now retired) and known for introducing an inclusive model at Walgreens distribution centers, resulting in ten percent of its workforce consisting of people with disabilities.

A strong partnership was formed with Have Dreams and Walgreens and since then, the training center has been key to helping Have Dreams establish new young adult job training programs, including Have Dreams Academy, which has a 90% placement rate in competitive employment. This year, Have Dreams began Career Launch: Your First Job to offer high school students with autism a simulated work experience to bridge the gap between high school and "first time" employment by providing hands-on experience, job coaching and critical social and communication skills.

For information about Have Dreams vocational training programs for young adults with autism, contact Sara LaMontagne at slamontagne@havedreams.org or see www.havedreams.org/young-adult.
