Did you know that God places great importance on numbers? He does! Numbers in God’s Word are rarely random. They are telling us something.
Elisha had Naaman dip in the Jordan river SEVEN times in order to be healed - and then he was! (See 2 Kings 5.)
When God ordered Joshua to have his people march around Jericho, He gave them orders to march for SIX days, then on the SEVENTH day, march around SEVEN times and shout - and when they did, the walls fell! (See Joshua 6.)
Seven is a VERY significant number in scripture. So is "10." When we give the first TENTH of what the Lord has blessed us with, we are giving a tithe. God is so into numbers that He even knows the number of hairs on your head (see Matthew 10:30).
Did you know God even counts by thousands? Of all the meaningful, symbolically important numbers in the Bible, the number 1,000 is one of the most significant. It’s also one of the most common. In fact, the word "thousand" or "thousands" appears 521 times in your Bible. Over and over it is used to indicate more than just a literal quantity of something.
It represents God’s unlimited power and abundance. For example:
God owns "the cattle on a thousand hills" (Psalm 50:10 NIV).
He has commanded His covenant of blessing "for a thousand generations"
(1 Chronicles 16:15 NIV).
God introduced Himself to Moses as He who is "Keeping mercy and loving-kindness for thousands" (Exodus 34:7 AMP).
There’s just something special about the number 1,000 in God’s spiritual economy.
He showed me a nugget hiding in a psalm I’ve probably read a thousand times. Right in the middle of Psalm 144, we find King David speaking a blessing upon the people of Israel.
It is a "thousandfold" blessing. David asks for the Lord’s help and favor in order: That our barns may be full, supplying all kinds of produce; That our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields . . .
(Psalm 144:13 NKJV).
In David’s day, livestock equaled wealth. There were no banks and no currency. David is literally calling for a thousandfold blessing upon the wealth of the people.
This is David, a man after God’s own heart, appealing to the unlimited multiplying power of the Lord. He is saying, take what we have, Lord, and multiply it abundantly!
