Marine Mammals Need Your Help!

Northern Elephant Seal

As you may have seen on the news, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
has recently declared an “Unusual Mortality Event” for California Sea Lions in our area.

See Video from CBS News Here

This is an emergency situation, especially in Los Angeles county as the number of strandings
this year between Jan. 1st
and March 10th is more than the past 5 years combined!
All of the rehabilitation centers are at capacity, which means these sick marine
mammals must be left on the beach, in many cases to die.

National Marine Fisheries has asked California Wildlife Center to set up a
temporary rehabilitation center on site to take in Northern Elephant Seal pups (initially)
and free up space at Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro for more
California Sea Lion pups.  A tremendous amount of work has already been done
determining all of the building, electrical, plumbing and other resources necessary
to pull this together.

The costs associated with this project are approximately $100K – we have tentative approval
for grant funding in the amount of $75K, but must raise $25K so that we can
get the project started immediately.

Will you please consider making a contribution now to make this project a reality?
Hundreds of marine mammals need medical care and, with your help,
we will be able to provide it.

The situation is heart breaking and timing is critical. Thank You.
