Monthly musical news from CMC!

Jazz Pianist Dan Tepfer Kicks off our Concert with Conversation Series on November 7

dantepfer-web 2Born in Paris to American parents, pianist-composer Dan Tepfer has translated his bi-cultural identity into an exploration of music that ignores stylistic bounds. His 2011 Goldberg Variations / Variations recording, which pairs his performance of Bach’s work with improvised variations of his own, has received broad praise. He has worked with many jazz greats, including saxophone luminary Lee Konitz, while releasing seven albums as a leader. All-around, Tepfer is “one of the moment’s most adventurous and relevant musicians,” according to New York magazine.
Thanks to San Francisco Performances for bringing Dan Tepfer to our stage in this free community concert!

L’Chaim – To life enriched by music!

Meet longtime CMC supporter Lucille Cuttler

Lucille Cuttler, who at 90 years old is a full four years younger than Community Music Center, has made regular gifts of $18 to CMC through the years. She know that $18 covers only about half of a 30-minute private lesson for a child from a low income family, but she gives regularly at that level, magnifying the impact of her giving. Asked why she gives monthly increments of $18, Lucille pointed to her Jewish heritage. She said that the number 18 has a spiritual significance in Judaism because the letters of the word Chai, or “life” in Hebrew, have a numerological value of 18.

Congratulations 2014-2015 Shenson Faculty Grant recipients!

Each year, The Shenson Foundation sponsors four free community concerts at CMC. These faculty members and their ensembles were selected by a committee of musicians from CMC’s Board of Directors.

Did you know that CMC depends on donations?

Earlier this year, CMC worked with volunteer consultants from Harvard Business School to review our business model. One of their key recommendations for ensuring the long-term sustainability of CMC was to let our community know that we depend on their philanthropic support. Each year, CMC provides over $1 million in tuition support and free programs. Approximately two-thirds of our 2,300+ students receive financial aid to keep their lessons affordable. You can help by making a donation online or getting involved as a volunteer. Contact John Robinson, Development Director, at (415) 647-6015 x76 or to learn more.

Share your musical memories of the Mission District with us!
