Sustainable Food Systems Discussion Series Recap

Groundwork completed our 6 work Sustainable Food System Series in partnership with the Urban Ecology Center. The course provided participants a chance to get to know their food system from the big picture. The course culminated with a panel discussion between farmers and chefs about the successes and challenges of local food systems.
Participants from the class will be taking a tour of the Blue Ribbon Organics composting site in Calendonia on Wednesday October 11th at 4:30. Everyone is welcome. $5 suggested donation. Please email Nick@groundworkmke.org to RSVP.

We plan to offer the Sustainable Food Systems Course in the future if you're interested in learning more - email nick@groundworkmke.org to get on the list for notifications.

Thanks for making it a wonderful first series!

Panelists and attendees

Give. Eat. Grow. at Marquette University

Groundwork was happy to be invited to be part of Marquette Univeristy's "Give. Eat. Grow." . Westowne Square was transformed into a hub of activity with opportunities to give back, grab lunch and learn about gardening. Students and alumni were able to enjoy the fresh produce, baked goods and treats from local vendors. Groundwork staff was able to share information about our work and participate in the harvesting and weeding of the Marquette community Garden. Antoine educated students and Marquette members on seed swapping and gardening techniques.

Canning and Food Preservation Class: Jam Time
Thank you to Arts@Large for hosting Groundwork Milwaukee's second Canning and Food Preservation class in the Walker Point area! During this class community members were able to receive information on Canning and Food Preservation techniques. Participants learned a jam recipe from Ms. Jeanine Becker and were able to take canned jam home. We hope people can save money by practicing food preservation! Thank you to all who participated and made this happen!  Stay tuned for more upcoming canning and preservation classes.

Engineers Without Border Volunteer Day

In the begining of October Engineer's without held their national conference in Milwaukee. Groundwork Milwaukee partnered with them to offer Community Service Workday, and they showed up in numbers! With their help we were able to build a rainwater harvesting structure, a stage, paint garden beds and woodchip the garden pathways for one of our newest gardens of  2017: The Marcus Garvey Garden. Thank you for all your help Engineer's without Borders
