In Memoriam - Jim Grundy

DSC_0315cropped2

The SolarFest community is deeply saddened by the passing of one of our stalwart supporters, Jim Grundy of Elemental Energy, East Montpelier, VT.  During the early years of the festival, Jim was involved as a volunteer and, more recently, was a perennial workshop presenter as well as a SolarFest sponsor.   Jim was a pioneer in the Vermont renewable energy world and a founding member of Renewable Energy Vermont.

We are extremely grateful for Jim’s tireless work promoting renewable energy for the good of our planet. He will be sorely missed.

News from the office...

Just six weeks left until SolarFest 2011! Do you have your tickets? Have you signed up to volunteer? Have you reserved your vendor space?  Time is running short and final deadlines are fast approaching. So as they say... "don't put off to tomorrow, what you can do today!"

This is our last big push to fill the remaining vendor spaces. Inside spaces are sold out but there are still plenty of great outside spaces to choose from. Help us fill our marketplace with the best, most innovative products available today.

Advance ticket sales are under way and will continue through July 1.  We're offering up to a $20 per ticket discount on weekend passes! Get all the details on our ticket page

We're still looking for volunteers. Become a part of bringing our great event to life by sharing your time, energy, and skills with us. See below for more specifics.

SolarFest will be presenting this month at both the Rutland Free Library and the Northshire Bookstore as part of their green living and sustainable living series.  Dates and details below.

And, we saved the best for last, our 2011 program is in print production right now, but you do not have to wait to get a sneak peek. We've posted it online here!

SolarFest at Rutland Free Library - June 15

Join us on Thursday, June 15 at 7PM for a fascinating overview of solar technologies, how electricity from the sun can save money or produce income, and find out what living "off the grid" means. John Blittersdorf is a board member of SolarFest in Tinmouth, owner of CV Solar in Rutland, and has 30 years of experience in energy efficient living.

This talk is part of an ongoing "Greening Your Home" series at the library, held the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7PM, and in cooperation with Sustainable Rutland and other area groups.

SolarFest at Northshire Books on June 23!

SolarFest will be presenting at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, VT on Thursday, June 23 at 7PM. See our promotional outline below.  We'd love to see some of you there!

INSIDE SOLARFEST - Please join us as we explore the making, history and future of Vermont’s own renewable energy festival, SolarFest. Now a three-day summer event in Tinmouth, Vermont, SolarFest has grown from its inspired inception 16 years ago to a full-fledged educational conference, music festival and trade show drawing thousands from all over the Northeast; just recently named as a recipient of a 2011 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.

Join us as we explore the myths (Is SolarFest just a party in the woods?) and the truths (Does SolarFest really offer over 80 top quality workshops?).  We’ll give you an inside look at a hard working, 99% volunteer run, not-for-profit environmental organization. Come hear the scoop on the journey, challenges, and opportunities that SolarFest has faced over the years.  Explore what SolarFest brings to our unique Vermont communities, how our mission has changed lives, how we run everything on solar, and what our next steps as an organization are.

Attendees should expect an interactive evening, invitations for feedback, and opportunities to check out SolarFest at a reduced rate.

WORKSHOPS - Be Prepared to Learn!

SolarFest workshops have always been a great way to be inspired and gain information. And this year is no exception! But we are also offering more HANDS-ON DEMONSTRATION workshops at SolarFest 2011. Some examples include:

Timber Framing Demonstration

Hands On Mushroom Production

Building a Compost Pile

Veggie Oil Vehicles

Soy Whey Furniture Refinishing

Foraging for Wild Mushrooms

Please check out our website and program for complete information. We hope to see you at SolarFest!!!

Last Call for Festival Volunteers!

If you haven't already heard, SolarFest 2011 promises to be one of the best to date, with amazing music including performances by Jon Cleary's Philthy Phew, Lynn Miles, Peter Mulvey, Antje Duvekot, Bow Thayer & Perfect Trainwreck, and Roomful of Blues. We have three days of diverse and professional workshops in 5 tents and outdoor demonstration areas.  And of course SolarFest fills in all the space in between with kids activities galore, food vendors, entertainment, RE vendors, merchandise, camping, bon fires and good times.

You can be part of that by volunteering 9 hours of time over the weekend in places like hospitality, workshops, parking, information, art wall, sales tent and more.

SolarFest cannot be successful without the 300 volunteers who dedicate their time in exchange for a weekend pass. Each one fills a vital role and makes the festival run smoothly.

Worried about working and missing all the fun? Our festival runs from morning to night and has over 80 workshops and music acts all day long. You are sure to have plenty of time to relax and enjoy.

Want more responsibility and involvement? We still have openings for department heads in Silent Auction, Art Wall, Youth Ambassador and Gate Survey. Ask Jaya at the email below for details.

Please register here or email our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@solarfest.org by June 25th, 2011.

Thank you,

Jaya Holliman, Volunteer Coordinator
