Girls Undefeated in Dual Swim Meets

Elaina_Gu_DEB_6491-X2 2The story of dual duels in the pools – the Churchill Girls Swim and Dive Team remains undefeated in dual meets. On January 17, Churchill soundly defeated rival Wootton by winning both the girls and boys competitions with a combined score of 221-121.The girls team won their portion of the meet 119-52, while the boys dominated with a score of 102-69.
Without a loss since the 2012-13
season, the girls team is kept afloat with outstanding senior leaders and up-and-coming underclasswomen.  The Washington Post ranked the team first in the metropolitan area as of January 13.          Churchill Ice Hockey Chills Opponents

Ross Allen Fights For Puck Along the Boards 2The Churchill Ice Hockey club season is flying by with a succession of league wins. The undefeated-in-league-play Varsity team is poised to make a deep run in the playoffs next month as they are currently ranked first in the division and second in the region (behind Gonzaga) in the Washington Post poll. With games coming up against Georgetown Prep, and perhaps a rematch with Gonzaga, the Varsity squad may actually move up into first place.

The January 9th game against division rival Walter Johnson started off with no score in the first period, but the tally went in the Bullldog’s favor when Ross Allen scored the first goal in the second period to give Churchill the first goal of the game. But the lead was short-lived when, less than a minute later, WJ’s Aaron Greene put one past Churchill goalie Marcus Hurd to tie up the game. Fortunately, a late second-period goal by Philip Satin put the Bulldog’s back in the lead for good and third period goals by Chris Barber, Andrew Kurapov and Charlie Butler, sealed the 5-1 win for another division win. On January 14, a decisive 5-0 win over Dematha continued to show the depth and talent of the varsity crew.

The playoffs (MHC- MSHL, MHC semi-finals and finals) begin the week of Monday, February 9th. Check out the team website for the schedule and cheer them on.         Wrestling Tournament

WrestlingThe CHS wrestling team made their presence known at the two-day Rebel Dual Tournament in Hagerstown last weekend. Due to the absence of several varsity wrestlers, JV team members stepped up to help bring home the 4th place team trophy. Congratulations to Ethan Dalva, JJ Bravo, and Giulian Groce who beat out all other wrestlers in their weight classes and won individual medals at the tournament. The next home match is January 21 at 6 pm against Blair.         Basketball Community Night

DSC_0494 3Cold outside, but warm with excitement inside, the CHS Basketball Community Night on January 9 featured fun and action at both the boys and girls varsity games. The local middle school and elementary students were invited to attend the games for free, play games at halftime, receive a CHS souvenir, and get a half-price t-shirt from their future alma mater. Photo: Young fans and CHS faculty enjoy the game.
