Philly Chapter Update

DSC03338-Edit

Welcome to the Fall Edition of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Harp Society’s Newsletter.  As the leaves begin to change and the heat of summer makes way for the cooler temperatures, fall is definitelyin the air.  Along with the change in seasons are the changes in schedules as back to school routines replace the freedom of summer vacations and long summer nights are replaced with shorter, cooler, crisp days.

The Philadelphia Chapter held bi-annual elections earlier this year and we are pleased to introduce Danielle Bash as the new President.  Elizabeth Huston has assumed the role of Vice President while Cheryl Cunningham continues as the Treasurer and we welcome Nichole Rohrbach as the new secretary.

On August 31st the officers met to discuss our vision 2015 and 2016.  Items of discussion included: Scheduling an Auditions & Evaluations for Spring 2016, Philly Harp Day, Philadelphia Chapter Recital, save-the-date postcard circulation, harp social events, education  workshops, harpist volunteer program, scheduling guest artists and partnering with Vanderbilt for the annual student competition among other things.

Additional research and inquiry is required for many of the topics discussed.  Stay tuned as the Chapter will most likely be reaching outto the membership for feedback, opinions and suggestions as they continue to move forward with the planning process for events, concerts, competitions and such.

The Philadelphia Chapter was honored to be awarded the 2014/2015 Chapter of the Year by the American Harp Society.  The full write-up can be found on the AHS website.  Photo Below from Regional Harp Day 2015.

Tips & Tidbits For Harpists

               SAVE THE DATES                 April 2nd & June 11th, 2016 AUDITIONS & EVALUATIONS

AHS sponsored Auditions & Evaluations have been scheduled for Spring 2016.  MArk your calendars now for these two important date, April 2nd and June 11th.  This is a two-part program for beginning and intermediate harp students and the format is outlined by the American Harp Society.  This program consists of two "auditions" held about a month apart in front of an evaluation panel.  The Auditions & Evaluations will be held at the Settlement Music School.  The cost for participation is $25 per person.  The scheduled time for each date is 5:00pm-8:00pm.  All participants should plan to attend both dates to maximize the benefit of the program.

“Auditions and Evaluations” is a two-part program for beginning and intermediate harp students sponsored by the American Harp Society.  It consists of two auditions held approximately one month apart.

The AHS believes it is important for students to receive feedback on their performance skills without being in a competitive setting.  As the AHS puts it: "The word “audition” comes from the Latin [audio] which means “to hear.”  We must not confuse our Harp Society “Auditions” with the more common usage of the word audition; for this is not a competition and there are no prizes awarded.  Participants come specifically to be heard and to hear one another.  Because this is a unique two-part program, the focus is especially on the improvement that can be made by participating on both days."

The Participants

On the first day, participants play two pieces of their own choosing for a anel and for one another.  A simple theory test is given on the first day [April 2, 2016].

On the second day [June 11th] of the program, about a month later, participants show their improvement by playing the same two pieces again.  In addition, they perform a third piece which they have prepared.

Participants are encouraged to stay and listen to as many other participants as possible during both auditions.  Everyone who participates in both Auditions receives a “Certificate of Participation: from the Music Education Committee of the American Harp Society.

I addition to the Auditions & Evaluations, we will be inviting all participants to join members of the Philadelphia AHS Chapter in providing a Chapter Student Recital.
