Duke & Duke is pleased to present the solo exhibition of artist Nancy Lorenz, a presentation of screens, paintings, and designs. Nancy Lorenz is known for her artisan creations which are influenced by Eastern art and translated abstract expressionism. Her use of rich materials and refined compositions create a harmonious balance. The opening of the exhibition will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Duke and Duke Gallery, and will be on view through September 21, 2012.
Lorenz's panels, paintings, and furniture designs incorporate brilliant layers of inlaid mother of pearl, silver and gold leafing, and lacquer. Lorenz spent five years living in Tokyo, admiring and exploring the craft of decorative arts, which in turn influenced the sophistication and polish found within her work. From geometric patterns to free forming abstracted landscapes Lorenz creates a sense of depth and texture in her material gestures. Her screens, paintings, and furniture create a sense of luxury while displaying her reverence for craft and technique, while her boxes compel a rawness in material that is then poured with metallic colors.
Nancy Lorenz earned a BFA in Painting and Printmaking. In 1988 she received her MFA in Painting from the Tyler School of Art, studying in Philadelphia and Rome. Lorenz received a John Simon Guggenheim award in 1998, and participated in the Cill Rialaig Artist In Residence Program in Ireland in 2008 and 2010. Her work has been commissioned in The Gucci Towers in Tokyo and Hong Kong, The Chanel Flagship store in Paris, the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the Mandarin Oriental in the Time/Warner center in NY, the Muscat Hilton in Oman, Oregon University Hospital in Portland, the Senayan Hotel in Jakarta, the US Consulate in Istanbul, and special projects for Bottega Veneta. She lives and works in New York City, with her husband and two children. |
