THE BEST CONTENT JUST GOT BETTER. AND WE ARE GETTING MORE...

Arab Spring 4NBC News Archives is expanding its international news collection. We are in the process of digitizing over 35 years of field tapes from NBC News coverage in the Middle East since the mid 70s. The material, currently held in the NBC News Cairo bureau, has never been aired and includes rare and exclusive content. Over several decades, NBC bureaus in Beirut, Tel Aviv, Amman and Cairo collected breaking news and war coverage, interviews with the region’s leaders, footage of archeological sites excavations as well as travel features and scenes of everyday life. Extensive unused B-roll material of the 2011 Arab Spring events will also be added to the NBC News Archives in New York.

THE YEAR FOR POLITICS

Elections Reel

Click to watch some of the best and worst moments of US presidential campaigns from the past 60 years.

NBC News is “the place for politics”  - and we are the archives for political footage. Beginning with the 1948 Presidential elections and continuing on to today’s latest “primary” moments and sound bites, NBC News has been at the forefront of American politics. NBC was the first network to televise a US President (FDR, 1939) and the first to broadcast a Presidential Inauguration (Truman, 1949).

Every man who has occupied the Oval Office has appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press which JFK once called the “fifty-first state.” In addition to Presidents and Vice Presidents, Meet the Press has featured interviews with all of the key players in each administration. First Ladies from Eleanor Roosevelt to Laura Bush have also been interviewed on the show. Premiered in November 1947, Meet the Press is the longest running program on network TV.

Last year NBC launched www.NBCPolitics.com, a website dedicated to the 2012 elections. All the content produced by NBC News political team, including the day’s events, analysis, social media and video is available 24/7. Click here to watch David Gregory's introduction to the site.

CONGRATULATIONS TO AWARD NOMINATED FILM MAKERS!

It’s awards season. Congratulations to all nominated film makers including several who used our footage to tell their stories.

Awards 2012 6

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Warner Bros./Fools In Love Productions, Inc.)
Nominated for Academy Awards Best Picture
Taking place on September 11, 2001, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close required footage of the burning World Trade Center Towers as playback on television screens as this historical tragedy unfolded. Commentary by Tom Brokaw and Matt Lauer was provided as well as footage from the NBC News 9/11 compilations reels.

The Help (The Help Productions, LLC)
Nominated for Academy Awards Best Picture

This movie is based on a popular book by
Kathryn Stockett that illuminated many aspects of racial discrimination and how it impacted everyday lives in this country. From NBC News' in-depth coverage of the fight for civil rights, we provided coverage of events like the JFK funeral and the murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers.  The news footage enhances the fictional story and provides invaluable historical context.

The House I Live In (Charlotte Street Films)
Winner of Sundance Grand Jury Prize

This documentary examines the impact drugs have on America and how policies have failed to remedy the War on Drugs. Footage licensed includes Richard Nixon commenting on the War on Drugs, Brian Williams reporting on federal sentencing rules on crack cocaine as opposed to powdered cocaine and a soundbite from Tom Brokaw about drugs being the number one issue in the country.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World (Spitfire Project G)
Nominated for BAFTA Best Documentary Film

Directed by Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese, this documentary on the life of the “Quiet Beatle” George Harrison was many years in the making.  The researchers involved in the production had the advantage of having access to a tremendous amount of never-before-seen footage from Harrison’s own collection.  Since the Beatles story has been well documented over the years, the challenge was to also find interesting footage from outside news sources as well.   NBC News Archives licensed footage of the Beatles with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, various Beatles press conferences and the announcement of John Lennon’s death by a New York police officer. We also licensed clips from an interview with Harrison on the Dick Cavett Show, represented by NBC News Archives.

TEAM'S FAVORITES

Staff Picks - Steve Jobs 2

Click to watch Steve Jobs
discussing the iMac.

“This is a clip of Steve Jobs from 1997 discussing the fact that iMac has become the #1 selling computer in America.  It was shot just after Jobs’ return as chief of the company that he originally founded.  This clip to me symbolizes the ability to bounce back and be successful despite obstacles.  It also marks the beginning of a period in which the world embraced products from Apple that became integrated and integral to our lifestyle. These products set a benchmark for design, functionality and unyielding focus on the customer experience which I believe is relevant to anything you do.”

Ira Black, Sales Manager. Prior to NBC News Archives, Ira was Business Development Executive at Thought Equity where he was part of the initial Eastern region sales team. Ira is a veteran sales executive having held various Director level positions at 724 Solutions, Nextel and Tandem Computers.
