Mother's Day in the Hospital

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. (That sentence will spark some of you to step away from the phone or computer, panic and run out for a card and flowers.) Some of us look forward to this day as an opportunity to spend the day with mothers or children that we adore.

For others, Mother’s Day is difficult. Some of us grieve for mothers who are no longer with us. Others grieve for broken relationships with parents or children.

Some of us have chosen not to have children, and the day seems awkward. Some of us long for children but have not been able to bear children; the day is one of lost hopes.

If Mother’s Day is difficult for you, then church is where you need to be this Sunday. Long before the first Mother’s Day, John Chrysostom (about 344-407 C.E.) described the church as a hospital for souls:

“In the Church, those worried acquire merriment, and those saddened, joy. In the Church, the troubled find relief, and the heavy-laden, rest.”

I have been praying that God would send us the people that no one else wants. My guess is that some of these are already here! There are people who are worried, saddened, troubled and heavy-laden who at times wonder whether their hardships mean that God does not want them.

Come on Sunday and be part of the church, a “hospital” of people who know we need God’s healing. And come for lunch, too. The evangelism committee is inviting those who cannot or will not be with mothers or children to join them for an alternative Mother’s Day lunch. No reservations needed, just meet at 12:15 at the Thai Star - 5370 Peachtree Industrial Blvd.

You are wanted, by God, Mount Carmel, and me.

Pastor Cyndi

A "Chapel in the Woods" hike has been planned for Saturday, May 9th at Red Top Mountain in Cartersville, GA. Everyone interested should meet in the church parking lot at 9:00 AM to car pool there.

The group will hike for a while, then stop for a devotion along the way. If you'd like more information, please contact Cheryl Martin.

United Methodist Women's "Day at the Lake" - May 30th at Lake Hartwell

All women of the church are invited to enjoy a day of fun at the lake house of Margaret Crawford in Anderson, SC.  We'll leave the church at 9:00 a.m., arrive at about 10:30, and then have fun eating and socializing. (Returning around dinner time.)

Margaret has mentioned a boat ride for all who want to go, or others may decide to relax in the shade or float around in the lake for a while!  (remember to bring a swim suit and sunscreen!)

Lunch and snacks will be furnished, but it is VERY IMPORTANT that we give Margaret an accurate head count by MAY 15 so that she can plan accordingly.

If you'd like to join the fun, just check the box on the back of the Connect Card in your Sunday bulletin, or contact the church office  (or 770-449-4498)

And THANK YOU to Margaret for graciously hosting the group again this year!

June is Music Month at Mt. Carmel!

During worship services in June, we'll sing favorite songs and hymns of the congregation, so please send in your favorites!

Send to the church office, or list them on the Connect Card in your Sunday bulletin.

Mt. Carmel Women's Book

The Women's Book Club will meet again on Friday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. This month the meeting will be at the home of Susan Posey.

This month's book is What Alice Forgot, by Liane Moriarity.

All women of the church are invited to join in the discussion, followed by light refreshments.  See Chris Bolton or Vicki Walden for more information.

Mt. Carmel Preschool is "Bugging Out" this Summer!

The Preschool will have a Summer Camp the week of June 29 - July 2, 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The week will be "bug themed" including music, crafts and lots of fun!

For more information, as well as registration, please go to the  church website or contact Ms. Cindy or Ms. Lorrie at the Mt. Carmel Preschool.

Fond Farewell

We have received the following note from Buddy and Kathy Atkins:

We will be moving to Florida on May 11, so next Sunday will be our last Sunday at Mt. Carmel ... Words just can't express what Mt. Carmel has meant to us all these years. We love every one of you and will miss you terribly. Thank you Pastor Cyndi and all you musicians for the wonderful messages and beautiful music.  God bless you all.

Love,
Kathy and Buddy Atkins

(The Atkins email will remain the same, and their new address is available from the church office.)

Watch for a Thank You Note

Lorrie Ignatius has asked that we include a big THANK YOU in this newsletter to everyone who helped with and attended the retirement reception in her honor on Sunday!

However, since the Preschool is right in the midst of preparing for end-of-year activities and graduation, she didn't want to rush through a thank you note right now - she would rather wait until she can take her time and express her true gratitude for all that everyone did in celebrating her years at the Preschool.

So watch for that Thank You note in a future newsletter!
