Keep the Nation Under Your Care

Every year at this time I share with you the prayer I pray on Independence Day.

While in seminary, each morning I would gather with about 10 other students before class, and together we learned to lead prayers by using the Book of Common Prayer. I learned to pray the Psalms by praying them with this group.

When I traveled for three weeks with other students in the Holy Land, it was natural to bring my prayer book with me.

To my surprise, students at Duke University had a similar group, and Tom brought his prayer book. Each morning, Tom and I met in the lobby of that day’s hotel to say prayers. The words did not change on the page, yet each day they were different as we prayed “keep this nation under your care” in another place. We prayed for peace in Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Israel. We prayed for the needy in the West Bank, Nazareth, and Jordan. We prayed in each place:

Show us your mercy, O Lord;

And grant us your salvation.

Clothe your ministers with righteousness;

Let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;

For only in you can we live in safety.

Lord, keep this nation under your care;

And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known upon earth;

Your saving health among all nations.

Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

Create in us clean hearts, O God;

And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Saturday is Independence Day, and I will pull out my prayer book and say these prayers again from this corner of the world.

Much has changed. After Tom graduated from seminary, he was appointed to create a new church in Michigan. He started “Church in a Diner,” and each night of the week he leads worship services with a different group of people in a different diner.

My situation has changed as well. As I pray for the needy I will pray for those who received lunches you packed, and I will pray for those Family Promise guests who will stay in our church soon. As I pray for ways of justice I will remember leaders I have met here in Berkeley Lake, Norcross, Peachtree Corners and Duluth.

As I pray "let your people sing with joy," I will think of the joy you brought on Sunday to Music Sunday—and the joy that you bring every week!

I'll see you this Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi

The Preschoolers are having lots of fun this week learning all about BUGS, as well as including them in some great sidewalk chalk art!

New Study begins Monday, July 13

Pastor Cyndi will soon lead a Monday night study of the book, Unbinding the Gospel

This nine week study, beginning July 13, is designed to help begin spiritual disciplines of daily prayer and scripture reading, and learning to pray with others. The study offers practical ways to live a more vibrant faith, growing in a relationship with God as we learn how to be accountable to one another.

Copies of the book are $10.50 and are available in the Hope House and back of the sanctuary. The class meets weekly at 7:00 p.m. for 1½ hours.

Please let Pastor Cyndi know if you plan to attend, pastor@mtcarmel-umc.org.

Altar Flowers Needed

As we move into the summer months, there are many upcoming Sundays when no one has sponsored the altar flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one.

The cost to sponsor these flowers is $40.

If you would like to place them one Sunday, please contact the church office to check dates and let us know what message should be listed in the bulletin.  Payment may be sent to the church office or dropped into the offering plate, marked "altar flowers."

We'd also like to remind everyone who has received flowers to please return the vases to the church if possible for our floral arrangers to re-use.  Thank you!

Children's Ministry

Sunday School
We are continuing our Monster Pillow designs this Sunday, so kids come prepared with great monster ideas.

Next Sunday, July 12, we will begin cutting out the patterns and will also make welcome cards for our Family Promise families.

Parents, we (children and families) are going to stay later that day and help get the rooms set for those families. We could especially use some Dads to help unload the truck with the beds. (See Family Promise article below for more information.)

Wacky Wednesday: July 8 - 10:00 - 1:00
Slime and Grime Day
We will play with slime and mud, eat some boogers on a stick (they are really tasty) and end the day with the slip and slide!

(For children ages preschool 4's - 5th grade)

Bring a lunch, $5, sunscreen, a swimsuit and a towel.

Email me at children@mtcarmel-umc.org if your child can come.

Marian Long

Director of Children's Ministry

Mt. Carmel Women's Book Club

 The book of the month is Gather Together in My Name, by Maya Angelou.

All women of the church are invited to join this group. This month there are two extra copies of the book and even if you can't attend the meeting, you are welcome to borrow one and read it for yourself. (Pick up a copy in the church office.)

For more information or directions, see Chris Bolton or Vicki Walden or visit the church website.

Fellowship Golf Outing: July 11

Family Promise: July 12 - 19
This summer we will once again be a host church in the Gwinnett County Family Promise Program.  We will host pre-screened homeless families in our church for a week, providing them with housing, food, fellowship, and most importantly, love.

LOTS of volunteers are needed for the week, including dinner and overnight hosts, van drivers, meal providers, set up and tear down helpers, and laundry angels. A training session is needed for some of the jobs, but not for all of them.

If you would like to help with Family Promise in some way, please sign up on the poster in the church foyer, or check a box on the back of the Connect Cards in your Sunday bulletin.

For more information on Family Promise, visit the church website or the Family Promise site.
