Our Hearts Beat Together

Did you know that when people sing, our bodies change? Studies show that when we sing, the brain releases hormones that are associated with feelings of pleasure. Oxytocin, also released during singing, alleviates anxiety and stress. No wonder we love to sing!

Even more interesting are the studies that show that when we sing together, our heart rates tend to synchronize. Not only do our voices merge, our hearts beat together!

I rejoiced in this at the opening of Annual Conference. As is our tradition, and the tradition of Methodists around the world, we began by singing the Charles Wesley hymn, "And are we yet alive."

Methodists from small towns with little more than a stop sign, gas station and church, join voices with Methodists from downtown Atlanta. Methodists from below the gnat line join voices with Methodists from the Smoky Mountains. We join voices and we join hearts.

Joining hearts is more than a song though. You joined hearts with others in Sub-Saharan Africa when you raised funds for Imagine No Malaria. You joined hearts with people facing disasters throughout the world when you packed 178 emergency health kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR.)  Your hearts are beating with children here in Norcross as you pack 1000 lunches for kids who would normally get lunch at school.

I hope you are proud of the ways you are joining voices and joining hearts. I am so thankful for you, and can't wait to sing more favorite songs with you this Sunday!

I'll see you on Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi

Prayers for Youth Mission Team

13 youth and 5 counselors will leave Hartsfield-Jackson Airport on Sunday morning, bound for Nassau, Bahamas. There they will spend a week adding a 2nd floor to a local church, as well as running a Vacation Bible School for 50-100 children!

Please keep them in your prayers for a safe and successful trip.

MUST Summer Lunch Program

600 sack lunches already delivered - 400 bags ready to be finished for Thursday and Friday!

Thank you for all of your donations and work to make this program possible for children who would normally get free or reduced priced lunch during the school year.

Please keep these children and the MUST Ministry volunteers in your prayers.

Children's Ministry

Sunday School: Children in Mission

Our new project comes out of Everest VBS Kid Vid Cinema where we saw the story of two brothers who shared God's power to comfort by designing and making cuddly stuffed monster toys for refugee children living here in metro Atlanta.

This summer, our children and youth will do the same! Just like in the video, we can comfort using God's power! This Sunday, we will create concept drawings for our cuddly monsters. We encourage all children in the church to submit drawings to us by Sunday the 28th.

We need some help with this if you have any of these items you would like to donate.

sewing thread, straight pins, machine needles, embroidery needles, embroidery thread, marking pens or chalk, bric-a-brac or other safe trims, felt, poly fiberfill, pre-washed fabric, or old clothes that cannot be donated due to rips or stains but that still have large sections of soft, useable cloth (cotton dresses, shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, skirts, etc.) fabric glue, or fabric markers

We also need volunteers with transportable sewing machines to assist / instruct the children in assembling their creations during 9:30 service Sunday school on July 19th and July 26th.

All Music Sunday: June 28 - 10:30 a.m. (Only one service)

Our "music month" of June will culminate with an ALL MUSIC SUNDAY on June 28th. There will be a 10:30 a.m. service ONLY where many more of the congregations favorites will be featured.

Mark your calendar for this fun worship service, and plan to stay for hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream afterwards!  (See below)

Summer Lunch / Ice Cream Contest! Sunday - June 28 at 11:30 a.m.

Following the Music Sunday service there will be a summer lunch of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and a Homemade Ice Cream Contest!  All food will be provided, only the ice cream makers need to bring anything.

If you think you make THE BEST homemade ice cream, please bring a freezer full to enter in the contest. The competition will be serious to see who can de-throne last year's Golden Scoop Winner, Marian Long!

You definitely won't want to miss this fun, summer Sunday!

Mt. Carmel Women's Book Club

The Women's Book Club will meet again on Friday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m.  The book of the month is Gather Together in My Name, by Maya Angelou.

All women of the church are invited to join this group. This month there are two extra copies of the book and even if you can't attend the meeting, you are welcome to borrow one and read it for yourself. (Pick up a copy in the church office.)

For more information, see Chris Bolton or Vicki Walden or visit the church website.

Fellowship Golf Outing: July 11

The next Fellowship Golf Outing is set for Saturday, July 11 at the River Pines Golf Course. Tee times will be set two weeks before the date, so watch future newsletters for that information.

Cost is $61 and the outing is open to ALL golfers, no matter their skill level.  Just come out and have fun!

Family Promise: July 12 - 19
This summer we will once again be a host church in the Gwinnett County Family Promise Program.  We will host pre-screened homeless families in our church for a week, providing them with housing, food, fellowship, and most importantly, love.

LOTS of volunteers are needed for the week, including dinner and overnight hosts, van drivers, meal providers, set up and tear down helpers, and laundry angels. A training session is needed for some of the jobs, but not for all of them.

If you would like to help with Family Promise in some way, please sign up on the poster in the church foyer, or check a box on the back of the Connect Cards in your Sunday bulletin.

For more information on Family Promise, visit the church website or the Family Promise site.
