From Pastor Cyndi

Marian Long stopped by the church office this morning to share a story from Homework Club. One of the volunteers, a high school student, is known for her love of coffee. When Marian stopped by the Fellowship Hall, the student and Craig German were gathered by the coffee pot. Marian said that the student was describing to Craig German a book she is reading in AP literature about the Vietnam War. Craig was sharing with her his real life experiences of service.

When I see Craig on Sunday mornings, I can always count on one of two gifts: him sharing a funny comic strip or information about a new resource for veterans. I appreciate both! Through Craig, I have learned about the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, VeteransCrisisLine.net), healing retreats for veterans at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, and “Stand Down” for homeless military veterans. Aren’t you thankful for people like Craig who served, and also work to bring healing to others?

My grandfather served in World War II, but never was able to share his stories with the family. He brought back a Japanese sword, a purple heart and other medals. Grandmother hung these proudly, but we never learned the stories behind these. As a child, I did not recognize in him the symptoms that I now understand as stress.

Today, Veterans Day, I commend to you the work of two friends. First, Kristin Vincent, shares the story of making prayer beads with veterans on her blog. She is helping to provide spiritual healing to veterans who have both brain injuries and PTSD.

Second, I commend the song Ernie Richmond wrote and sang in worship on Sunday. Ernie wrote this out of a desire that those returning from Iraq would know the healing found in the church and in serving others. As you read the lyrics below, consider the ways you have seen or known healing. So often, this is through someone caring enough to being present and show God’s love.

There is all sorts of healing needed in the world today. Thank you, Mt Carmel, for the ways you reach out with hope, prayers, presence, and love, helping people to find Christ, and in this way know healing of the soul. I’ll see you on Sunday,

I’ll see you this Sunday,
Pastor Cyndi

God is With You
by Ernie Richmond

Just got back home from the war in Iraq
Nothing I own but the clothes on my back
Feel so confused ‘bout the world I have seen
Nothing is as it seems

Lord won’t you help me forget where I‘ve been
No one can see me I’m just blending in
Deep down inside me I feel so much pain
Help me feel normal again

Passing a church and I feel somehow drawn
To enter this place though I’ve done so much wrong
Down on my knees now I’m praying alone
Lord won’t you take me home

Feeling that I am no longer alone
Turning to see someone just going home
He stops and he says thanks for all you have done
God is with you my son.

Lord, I hear you calling,
Lord, I hear my name
Lord, I hear you calling me,
Lord, I hear my name

It’s been six months since I heard the Lord’s call
Work at a shelter help others who fall
The homeless and helpless the weak and the lame
Help them to be whole again

Teach them ‘bout God and his Holy embrace
His love and compassion his mercy and grace
Teach them to pray and to listen to  Him
Help them to be still within

God has taught me that the secret to life
Is to help other people, be a part of their life
A word or a touch or a listening ear
Lets them know God is near

So Live every moment and Love everyone
Seek inner guidance and find the Son
He is the rock that will guide you along
He Loves you and calls you to Him

Lord, I hear you calling,
Lord, I hear my name
Lord, I hear you calling me,
Lord, I hear my name

It's A Wonderful Church!

What would the CHILDREN of the church do if there were NO Mt. Carmel Children's Ministry or Preschool?

Click HERE to see the third installment of "It's A Wonderful Church," a vision of what the world would be like without Mount Carmel.

We're all looking forward to the next act of this miniseries in church on Sunday!

Children's Ministry

Sunday School
We have an exciting lesson this week from 1 Kings 18:29-39, where we will learn about Elijah challenging the followers of the false god Baal. Elijah calls out to God and God answers with fire. We will focus on how our prayers are so important and that every prayer is heard by God.

Island Christmas Practice:
3:45 Sunday, Nov. 15
We are starting a little earlier this week so we can run through the music before we start actual play practice.

We will also practice the music at Sunday School.

REMEMBER NO SCRIPTS THIS WEEK.

Needed for the play set: a Broken Golf umbrella (will not be returned)

Mt. Carmel Women's Book Club: Nov. 13

All women are invited to join the Mt. Carmel Women's Book Club

Thanks to the Mt. Carmel Men's Ministry for providing the turkey, ham, dressing, potatoes, green beans, rolls and cranberry sauce! Happy Thanksgiving!

The Angel Tree in Coming Soon!

The Angel Tree will be up in time for the Thanksgiving Dinner on November 22nd, so remember to stop by in the foyer and take an angel or two.

Just sign the list provided with the number on your angel, do your shopping, and return your gifts (unwrapped) to the church by December 9th.

Thank you for helping children from local schools and Norcross Cooperative Ministry have a merry Christmas!

Silent Auction Items Due This Sunday!

The Silent Auction is almost here and items are needed by NOVEMBER 15th!

If you have something to donate for the auction, please either bring it to the Hope House by this Sunday morning, or email Jacque Tapley what you will be donating by Thursday, November 19th.  Also let Jacque know if you have a large item that needs to be picked up.

The auction will be held all day on Sunday, November 22 and will benefit World Vision and Family Promise of Gwinnett (a world outreach and a local charity.) The funds will be divided 50/50 for each of these worthwhile causes.

For more information on World Vision or Family Promise, please visit their websites, see previous newsletters, or contact the church office.

THANK YOU for helping us help others and remember to come and shop on November 22!

Kid's Night Out: December 11, 6-9 pm

The Mt. Carmel Youth will once again offer, as a service project, a "Kid's Night Out" in December for PARENTS to actually get a night to enjoy a quiet dinner or maybe finish up some Christmas shopping!

Meanwhile, you'll know that your children are having fun eating pizza, making gingerbread houses, and watching fun movies with their friends!

This event is open to children ages 2 years through 5th grade and the cost is only $5.00 to cover the expense of supplies.

RSVP to either Marian Long - children@mtcarmel-umc.org or Raven Hinson - ravenhinson4885@gmail.com.

Christmas in the Corners Parade 2015!
Nov. 21, 2015 - 9:30 am

Can you say WALKING NATIVITY?
Mt. Carmel will participate in the Peachtree Corners Christmas Parade and we need CHILDREN (and their parents) to walk the 1/2 mile parade route, dressed as biblical characters associated with the first Christmas!  (Ms. Marian will provide costumes)

We will gather in Peachtree Corners at 9:30 a.m.and the parade begins at 10:00. The parade will process for 1/2 mile along Corners Parkway, and we'll be passing out caramels and invitations to holiday gatherings at Mt. Carmel.

If you would like your children to participate, you need to complete a consent form.  This can be emailed or picked up from the church office and MUST be returned by THIS SUNDAY to church or to Katrina Stone.  (There will be drop off locations in the History Room and Downstairs in Sunday school area.)
