From Vicki Walden - Staff Parish Chair

Sunday, April 2, 2017, was the date this year that each church in the North GA Conference shared with the congregation the pastoral appointment for the upcoming church year. Some of you may not be aware, but about ¼ of United Methodist Churches experience a pastoral change each year. This practice is known as itinerancy. Decisions for these annual appointments are bathed in prayer and not made in a vacuum – this is a communal and corporate process and input is received from many sources before final decisions occur.

For the past six years, we have had the pleasure of announcing the appointment of Pastor Cyndi to Mount Carmel. This year Mt. Carmel UMC will be experiencing a pastoral change. As Pastor Cyndi and I announced at each service this past Sunday, she has been appointed Pastor at Barnesville United Methodist Church in Barnesville, GA. We are pleased that Pastor Cyndi will be with us throughout the Easter season and into Pentecost – all throughout the upcoming 11 weeks. Her last day to preach at Mt. Carmel will be June 18th.

I want to take this opportunity to speak for the SPR Committee and the congregation at large in telling Pastor Cyndi what a blessing she has been to Mt. Carmel. Let me just share a few examples. Before Pastor Cyndi arrived in 2011 we did not offer Stations of the Cross, Mission Moments, The Homework Club and Family Promise. Our small groups have grown in number and thrived in content. She has successfully worked through quite a number of staff changes, most notably within our Children and Youth ministries, ensuring these programs continued to prosper at Mt. Carmel.

She brought the church community through a change from 3 services to 2 several years ago, which required much understanding, love and open communication on her part and in engaging others to follow her lead. Last summer she also offered a series of services at Kiko’s Restaurant as a special outreach effort for the community. Her commitment, energy and dedication have been unwavering in fulfilling our church’s mission through life transforming relationships with God, with one another and with neighbors.

In simple words, we love her, and wish her many blessings and successes in her new appointment and know that she will continue to shine in her walk with the Lord.

Rev. Michael Martin has been appointed to serve as Pastor at Mt. Carmel UMC commencing on Sunday, June 25th (Music Sunday, combined service). Rev. Martin’s profile/resume may be found on his LinkedIn page, and he has already reached out to us and shared the following message:

"My wife Karen and I are excited to be coming to Mt. Carmel to work alongside such a vibrant and dedicated group of disciples and a full complement of committed, Christ loving staff.

Speaking of Karen, we were high school sweethearts and married while attending Augusta College. We have two grown sons Wesley and Ryan and a precious granddaughter named Presley Ann.

Karen is a Senior Tax Manager with AT&T in Atlanta. She has a passion for children and youth ministries.

I have a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology from Augusta College and a Masters of Divinity from Candler School of Theology, Emory University and I am a Full-Time Elder in the North Georgia Conference currently serving Austell First United Methodist Church. I am a Past President of The Rotary Club of South Cobb and a current Assistant Governor for Rotary District 6900. I am co-founder of The Austell Community Collaborative that brings churches, schools, civic groups, city government and non-profits together to assist the children and youth of the community through mentoring programs, parental engagement, safe-space initiatives, counseling and school graduation improvement.

I have a passion for preaching and teaching, community outreach, and loving folks into the Kingdom of God. I enjoy being involved in the local community through church and civic outreach projects. I enjoy travel, model railroading, collecting guitars and kayaking."

More information about activities and services surrounding the change in pastors and related events will be forthcoming.

If you would like to learn more about the annual appointment process, there is an excellent video by our Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson that is about 20 minutes long. You can find it on the North GA UMC website HERE.

The children are invited to join us this week, Palm Sunday, on the back two rows in the sanctuary prior to the 9:30 and 11:00 am services to process with palms.

Norcross Cooperative Ministry Needs Our Help
in April!

April is Mt Carmel's food drive month for the Norcross Cooperative Ministry. As a member church, we sign up for this twice a year.

This time it's all about peanut butter and jelly. Please bring your donations (in plastic jars or bottles, please) to the NCM tub in the church foyer.

This is Mt Carmel's month, so it's a really good time to show our support for NCM and the families it serves!

Monetary donations are always welcomed too - just make your check out to Mt. Carmel and mark it for NCM.

Thank you for your generosity!

Outreach Opportunity
Are you willing to serve local families in crisis for a couple of hours?

We need lots of people who are willing to commit NOW to help during our 2 host weeks, June 11 - 18 and August 6 - 13.

A training session will be held on May 7.

Please pray about this and consider how you can help. If you don't want to show up alone, ask a friend, neighbor or family member to serve with you.

To sign up or ask questions, please contact Julie Jones at

Women's Book Club

The next meeting of the Book Club will be on Friday, April 7th in the Hope House.  The book of the month is, A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.

All women are invited - light refreshments will be served.
Contact Vicki Walden or Chris Bolton for more information.

It's Time to Order Easter Lilies!

The Mt. Carmel United Methodist Women are once again placing Easter lilies in the sanctuary on Easter Sunday.

The cost is $8.00 per lily. Checks should be made payable to Mt. Carmel UMW.

Art Date planned for April 23

Everyone is invited to the Festival of Arts on April 23rd at Cumming First United Methodist Church.

Our own Katrina Stone has entered 4 pieces in the show!

It's Time for the UMW Sweet Shop
at the spring BBQ! April 28 & 29

Lots of volunteers are needed to provide homemade baked goodies and to work at the Sweet Shop on Friday & Saturday.

If you can help, please sign up on the back of the Connect Card in your Sunday bulletins or contact the church office.

Proceeds from the Sweet Shop are used by the UMW to help fund missions which include Norcross Cooperative Ministry, Murphy-Harpst Home for Children, Action Ministries and others.

The United Methodist Women thank you!

Thank You Very Much

I would like to thank the congregation for all of the kindness shown to me during and after my recent knee surgery.

I appreciated the cards, meals, prayers and phone calls so much.  It's good to be a part of such a caring community.

Thank you all,
Lane Shutt

Summer Camps

Mt. Carmel is celebrating fairytales and music with our two summer camps this year. Fairytale Camp is June 26-29 and Music Camp is July 17-20.

Each camp will have a busy schedule that will include outside time, music and movement, stories and crafts all packed in to a 4 hour day! The children will attend from 9:00-1:00 Monday through Thursday.

All children ages 3-6 are invited if they are potty trained. The children will also need to bring a lunch each day. The camps fill up quickly so be sure and get your registration in before we reach our maximum number of campers.

The cost will be $100 for the week which will include a non-refundable deposit of $50* due at the time of registration. The final payment of $50 is due on or before the first day of camp.

Even if you don’t attend Mount Carmel during the school year you are welcome to attend, so tell your friends!

Click HERE for registration forms, or contact Preschool Director Cindy Bill for more information.
