Help Me with Your Name

I love numbers. Sometimes they tell interesting stories.

It’s the time of the year when people often return to church after being away. As usual, the stewardship team is sending postcards inviting those who are part of Mt Carmel and those who have visited Mt. Carmel to be part of the Christmas celebrations.

As Suzanne prepared the postcard addresses, she noticed how many visitors have returned to Mt Carmel. In the last year, 33 individuals or families have turned in connect cards. Of these, 11 are now part of our regular church worshippers.

That’s an amazing number. A third of those who visit and sign a card return. And return. And return.

I think there are two forces driving these numbers. First, it says something about our neighbors. People are looking for something more. We recognize that giving thanks should be about more than getting stuffed. Evenings should be more than watching television. Christmas should be more than shopping and spending. We know there should be something more—even if we cannot name that we long for real connections with other people, a vital connection with God.

It’s easy to go from store to store, from work to the gym, from the office to home, never connecting, never noticed.

This brings us to the second reason people return to Mt Carmel. You noticed them. You offered a handshake that meant, “I am grateful you are part of this world.” You looked someone in the eye, and in doing so said, “you matter.” You discovered that someone was a Georgia Tech fan (lots more of these recently!) that they have a new grandchild or were new to the area and looking for a good dentist, and the next week asked about that team or child or search.

In his telling of sheep and goats being separated, Jesus praises those who fed the hungry, offered water to the thirsty, gave a coat to the cold (Matthew 25:31-46.) Included in this list are the people who welcomed the stranger. We do all of these at Mt Carmel, don’t we? And most weeks we welcome a stranger, too.

Notice someone. If you aren’t sure of a name or whether you recognize the face, simply ask, “help me with your name.”

It is the Advent season, when we celebrate the coming Christ. His name Emmanuel means God with us. Our neighbors need to know that God wants to be with us, God notices, God sees us, offers forgiveness, peace, and hope. That’s what we do when we welcome the stranger. We join in with a God who is already reaching out—not to a number, but to the person, who needs to know that they matter to God and to us.

I'll see you this Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi

This year's Dinner Theater is on March 13 and 14 and AUDITIONS will be held THIS SUNDAY!  (December 7)

If you'd like to be in the play, come to the Fellowship Hall at 12:30 this Sunday.  Rehearsals will be on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons beginning in January.

Wednesday Services of Holy Communion

During December, step away from the busyness and noisy preparations and pause for a moment of peace in the presence of Christ.

A brief (15-minute) time of quiet celebration will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 10 and 17 at noon and at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary. This time of simple worship will include silence, scripture and Holy Communion.

Holy Communion taken to Shut Ins

If you are unable to get to church, or know of someone who is, and would like to have Holy Communion taken to your home, please contact the church office.

Holy Communion will be delivered to Shut Ins on Wednesday, December 10th in the afternoon.

Also if you would like to help deliver, you may contact the office too.

Angel Tree 2014

The Angel Tree is up and running, so remember to stop by in the foyer and take an angel or two as you do your shopping!

Children's Ministry

Sunday School:
The children’s December lessons are different from the Narrative Lectionary this month. This week we are looking at the Isaiah 42:1-9 passage which describes the kind of Messiah God intends to send. Isaiah tells Israel that God’s Messiah will be gentle and kind, a servant rather than a ruler.

Trinity Soup Kitchen: January 11

Once again our Youth will serve LOTS of soup, sandwiches and granola bars to the homeless at the Trinity Soup kitchen in Atlanta.

In preparation, LOTS of vegetable beef soup and granola bars are needed, so collection is starting NOW!  If you can provide a gallon or two of soup, or a box of granola bars, please sign up on the Connect Card in Sunday bulletins.

You may begin bringing these to the church in December. Please place the soup in the freezer in the church kitchen and granola on the counter. And remember to mark it with your name. Thank you!

9th Annual Flashlight 5K for Family Promise!

Dear Family Promise Supporter,

On New Year’s Eve, Family Promise is sponsoring the 9th Annual Flashlight 5K Road Race, held in Lawrenceville.

It is called the Flashlight 5K because the race begins at 6:00 PM and it is going to be dark. The fun of the race is that volunteers station themselves around the course with flashlights cheering the runners on to victory.

We need volunteers to come for 90 minutes and be a cheerleader. If you don’t have a flashlight, don’t worry we will provide you with one.

To take part, call:
Chuck Ferraro 678-376-8950 or Tom Cioffi 770-985-7353.

Congratulations to these newly married members!

The couple lives in Boston, where David works as a web developer and Claire is the program director at Haley House, an inner-city ministry.
