Someone Else's Song

I am visiting Mark for a few days. Our plan is for me to visit churches, museums and parks while he is at work. We meet for lunch and spend evenings together.

The first 24 hours have been lovely. We caught a show (half price tickets at Times Square!) This morning I checked out the labyrinth at a nearby church.

But I am having a hard time sticking to the plan. Mark's apartment is overflowing with boxes of gaming equipment and his clothes are in suitcases. It is all that I can do to refrain from googling "where is the closest IKEA" and organizing his stuff.

My idea of a good time and fulfilling visit would be to organize Mark's apartment. Mark is content with the status quo and does not want Mom going through his things. He is excited about showing me the nearby Greek restaurant, his favorite ice cream shop, and the highlights of his walking route to work.

So rather than sing my song, organize and fix, this week I am singing Mark's song. I'm learning to see and appreciate what is important to him.

It seems to me that we do that in the summer when we sing one another's favorite songs. We listen for and appreciate what is important to one another.

We do that when we read the Psalms. Not every Psalm is one of praise expressing joy. Some of the Psalms describe distress and call on God for help. Other Psalms express trust, even though God seems far away.

It's tempting to listen only to my favorite song and to read only my preferred Psalms.

It's tempting to pay attention to the news source that agrees with my own political position, to talk only with people who agree with me on social issues, and to read the books that I know will support my position without challenging my understanding.

But in the church, we expect the Holy Spirit to lead. That means God will speak through unexpected people and in unexpected ways. If we in the church agreed 100% on every issue, then that would mean the Holy Spirit has stopped being active in growing us in our understanding of God.

So come to worship on Sunday and sing someone else's song. Listen for how God is at work in someone else's life. And expect that God can speak to you in their way, too!

I'll see you on Sunday,

Pastor Cyndi

Please keep these youth and adults in your prayers during the week of June 21 - 28.

Mission Trip Request - Boy's Clothing Needed

Our mission team has received a request just today from Mission Discovery, the mission trip organizing group.

It seems that the children our Youth will be serving in Nassau are in desperate need of clothing for BOYS, ages 2 - 10 years. These should be items that they could wear to school.

If you can provide CLOTHING FOR BOYS of this age, please bring it to the church on Sunday, or to the office BY WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17. Thank you!

We will also help bring over the partially filled lunch bags for MUST Ministries that were stored in the Hope House.

MUST Summer Lunch Program

Next week (June 15 - 19) is when we will make 1000 lunches for the MUST Summer Lunch Program and we need your help!

We NEED donations of juice boxes, chips, sweet snacks, sliced ham and turkey, and cheese singles.  These need to be in the church kitchen by this Sunday.

We also NEED volunteers on Sunday after the worship services to kick off the week.  There will be a light lunch provided for those who can stay to help fill lunch bags for the week.

And finally, we NEED hands to prepare sandwiches each morning at 9:00 AM so we can deliver the lunches to another local church who will in turn, deliver them to the children in local apartment complexes.

If you can help on Sunday and / or any of the week days, please call Joanne Ragon at 770-271-7350, or Suzanne in the church office.  Thank you!

Family Promise: July 12 - 19
This summer we will once again be a host church in the Gwinnett County Family Promise Program.  We will host pre-screened homeless families in our church for a week, providing them with housing, food, fellowship, and most importantly, love.

LOTS of volunteers are needed for the week, including dinner and overnight hosts, van drivers, meal providers, set up and tear down helpers, and laundry angels. A training session is needed for some of the jobs, but not for all of them.

If you would like to help with Family Promise in some way, please sign up on the poster in the church foyer, or check a box on the back of the Connect Cards in your Sunday bulletin.

For more information on Family Promise, visit the church website or the Family Promise site.

Thank You Very Much!

Mt. Carmel Family,

Well words cannot describe how grateful I am for all of you.  I have grown up seeing your smiling faces almost every Sunday. You have all helped me in my walk with Christ, and I cannot thank you enough. Your gift to me was amazing and I cannot wait to read the book you gave me.  I will miss seeing everyone at church but I am excited to come home from school and see everyone.

Thank you all again and God Bless,
Mackenzie Gallagher
