Officers Installed at Spring Lunch
photo3

Members gathered at The Club for lunch April 30 to install officers for the coming administration.  Past President Laura Chapman installed President Valerie Thomas, Vice President Kim Brunsting, Recording Secretary Melissa Yen, Corresponding Secretary Lynne Faulstich, Treasurer Claudine Ali, and Parliamentarian Fran Nagy.  She reminded them of the friendships that are formed as new members are welcomed to this group.  Each officer was presented a single yellow rose representing friendship.

President's Message
Greetings!
This past year has been a very exciting year for our club. We have had many wonderful opportunities to meet new friends, get together with old friends and learn more about many interesting topics and areas of interest within the UAB and the Birmingham community.
Our membership has grown by thirteen this year and the 45th Anniversary UAB Women’s Club History Book is soon to be published and available. Please look for this email announcement within the next month. We have exceeded our fundraising for scholarships goal this year, and this effort has gained new momentum. We have received a generous donation of $10,000.00 to set up the UAB Women’s Club Scholarship Endowment Fund. This seed donation gives us a wonderful start to begin working towards meeting the $25,000. 00 reserve over the next five years.  This perpetual fund will also allow us to reach beyond our membership to fundraise and has the potential to help us continue to grow our membership through the added visibility.
When Elaine Noe asked me to serve as the Program Chair/VP two years ago, I immediately said, “NO”. Elaine was persistent and said, “Don’t tell me your answer now just think about it.” I did think about it and realized if we all say NO there will not be a UABWC. It is only through efforts from volunteers that this club will continue grow and thrive. I am confident that your new President, Valerie Thomas with her excitement and enthusiasm will help this club grow and flourish.  But she can’t do this alone, so the next time she calls you and asks for your help please say, “YES”.
It has been an honor to serve the UABWC, and this experience has been very rewarding for me. I am grateful to all of you for your hard work, trust, support, and mostly for your friendship.  I hope you enjoy your summer and I look forward to seeing all of you in the next academic year!
Sincerely,
Fran Nagy

2013 Scholarship Recipients Announced
At the Spring Lunch, Scholarship Committee Chairperson Annie Cornwell announced the students who were awarded funds from our scholarships accoring to need.
Christina McCoo
Christina is a determined young woman who, upon finishing high school in 2006, thought hard about what her next step might be. With the dream of working as an illustrator and graphic designer, but without the experience or knowledge of how to launch a career in the field, she enrolled at Lawson State and graduated cum laude with an Associates of Art degree. She then entered the Bachelor of Fine Arts program as an Art Studio student at UAB. Christina is now a senior and expects to graduate in Spring 2014.
While at UAB, Christina has distinguished herself among her professors and peers. Outside of the classroom, Christina contributes time and talent to her church. She values working with others and hopes to eventually open her own design company where she can offer hands-on experience to students seeking a career in illustration and graphic design.
Raime Cendoma
Raime has worked as a dental assistant and, more recently, as a dental hygienist. Her goal is to become a dentist. Community service and volunteerism are driving forces for Raime. As a young assistant, she helped to provide dental care to soldiers awaiting deployment. More recently, as a hygienist, Raime has provided oral health education, along with dental treatments/screenings to schoolchildren. Her work with Cahaba Valley Health Care has introduced her to the service of lower income individuals and has inspired her to continue her education.
Raime is currently enrolled at UAB in Healthcare Management with an expected graduation date of May 2015. She then plans to continue on to become a dentist. Raime and her husband, also a student, hope to start a family soon.
Sarah Patterson
Sarah is a senior in the English and Secondary Education programs at UAB. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a middle grades language arts teacher. Sarah has a passion for helping young people develop attitudes of tolerance through the implementation of diversity minded curriculum in her classroom. Further, she hopes to utilize her technology skills toward innovative lessons designed to help motivate all students, regardless of backgrounds, to grow academically. In her free time, Sarah enjoys volunteering with the youth in her community through fundraising, organizing activities, and chaperoning trips for the ECY Youth Group and Pell City High School Band. She also enjoys spending time with her daughter, Chloe, and supporting her in her many activities and pursuits.

Scholarship Endowment Initiated
At the Board meeting April 26, 2013, the officers acted to approve an agreement with UAB Torchlight Foundation to establish an endowment fund for UAB Women's club scholarships.  The initial donation of $10,000 by an anonymous member  was gratefully accepted.  A commitment was made to raise an additional $15,000 to complete the initial endowment by 2018.  When we reach $25,000. anual distributions of 5% of the proceeds of the fund will be available for scholarships.  A formal plan for raising these funds will be presented at the membership meeting in August.
