Tone Your Bones Informs Members

A healthy group of UAB Women's Club members assembled at the Learning Center at Kirklin Clinic for a class on Osteoporosis led by Beth Kitchins, MS RD, Assistant Professor of Nutrition Sciences.  While attendees enjoyed a tasty lunch, she covered topics including risk factors, available medicines, and the role of Calcium and Vitamin D in preventing this condition that affects so many women.

A message from the President.... Happy Holidays!
While I’d like to slow the clock a bit and have more time to savor the season,  I can’t resist looking ahead to the upcoming events  with  UAB Women’s Club. Building on our long history of friendship, educational support and community involvement, this season of UABWC activities holds opportunities for each of us to grow and to make a difference.
Right off the bat, we have a chance to enhance our holiday repertoire with a cooking demonstration at Whole Foods on November 4th.
Next month, on December 16th, UABWC members and guests are invited to a holiday luncheon at Rucker House. These are wonderful opportunities to celebrate friendship and to share the UABWC spirit with other women by inviting a potential member as a guest to one of our programs.
Also this season, we kick off our annual scholarship fundraising drive as we continue our tradition of supporting education for women at UAB.  While I enjoy our special group and all that we do throughout the year, this is the effort that speaks volumes to me. With a simple invitation to give, our membership shares their generosity and their commitment to fellow women with thoughtful donations toward scholarships each year. Simple? Yes. Profound? Definitely. Sixty deserving women have benefitted from the generosity of UABWC members over the years. Lets do our very best to make that number grow.
Opportunities to build community and to support UAB abound and our members are involved in many campus-wide efforts. One that many have contributed to in the past is the UAB Suits for Success Drive. This year it is scheduled for November 7-11 from 6:30-10:30 am each day. Women’s business attire can be dropped off at the John N. Whitaker Bldg located at 500 22ndSt S.
Let us know about other UAB community efforts that you are active with. Others may want to get involved! We can spread the word through our newsletter, get other members involved and make an even bigger difference within the UAB community.
Thanks to each of you for the inspiration!

5th annual UAB SUITS FOR SUCCESS DRIVE November 7-11/2011  (11/7-11/11, easy to remember!!)

This wonderful drive is for economically disadvantaged women who need clothes for job interviews and work. ALL donations go to My Sister's Closet, of the Birmingham YWCA, which serves over 30 different women's shelters.  Clean out your closets before the holidays for this uniquely UAB cause.  Needed are shirts, skirts, suits, dresses, slacks and casual pants (yes, nice jeans too!), shoes, purses and accessories of all kinds, and unopened toiletry, undergarment, and hose packages.
UABWC has been a major supporter from the start, so let's go and do ourselves proud!!

EASY drive up and drop off!! John N. Whitaker Building, 500 22nd St.South, from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., each day!
It’s that time of year when the UAB Women’s Club begins collecting donations for the scholarship fund.  To date UABWC has awarded scholarships to more than 60 women as they strive to become college graduates.  Soon you will  receive a letter in your mailbox with details about how to contribute.    Or, simply make out a check to UAB (with UABWC Scholarship Fund noted on the memo line), and mail it to UAB Women’s Club, P. O. Box 661341, Birmingham, AL 35266.  You can make your donation online by going to UAB’s eGiving page.  Select  “Student Support” in the first drop down menu and “UAB Women’s Club Scholarship” from the drop down menu at the bottom of the page.   Remember that all contributions to this fund are 100% tax deductable.  This group has been so generous in the past.   Let’s continue this great tradition!
Thanks for your support!
