January Program: Samford University Planetarium
It was a gray day in mid-January that brought 20 or more of our members together on the Samford University campus. Quite a few of us showed up early for lunch in the dining hall. We then joined additional friends at the Planetarium for a fascinating presentation by Samford professor, George Atchley. He first shared a film entitled Ringworld documenting the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn. After the film, we were enlightened and entertained with facts and stories of the Birmingham night sky. An animated question and answer session followed before it was time to trade the stars within the beautiful Planetarium facility for daylight.
February meeting Cancelled Due to Weather
The Friday evening event at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery had to be cancelled because of storms in the area. Unfortunately, current exhibit will close after Friday, March 9th. It is entitled "i have a secret wish" and features female artists. For those interested, the gallery (located on the ground floor of the Humanities Bldg at 900 13th St S) is open M-F from 9am-6pm.
A Message from the President
Spring is around the corner and for the UAB Women’s Club that means that we have a number of exciting opportunities to enjoy before the close of this 2011-2012 season. We are having quite a year. By personal invitation and through our website, we have been graced with new members. I encourage each of you to welcome women within the UAB community who would benefit from all that the UABWC has to offer. Our Membership Committee is always ready to reach out and help to get them connected. Our programs this year have been entertaining, informative, fascinating, delicious and thoroughly enjoyable. Our Program Committee has done an outstanding job of providing opportunities of interest to our members and attendance has demonstrated just that. Stay tuned for even more to come! Our Fundraising Committee did a wonderful job of getting the word out to all regarding our scholarship fund drive and the response has been beautiful. Sixty percent of our active members along with a number of non-active individuals have generously contributed over $5200 in scholarship funds. Our Scholarship Committee is about to get very busy with the important task of screening scholarship applications and recommending awardees. They have also made all of the arrangements for our annual Scholarship Luncheon and Installation of Officers to be held in April. Our Nominating Committee worked efficiently in the early part of 2012 to assemble our slate of officers for the 2012-2013 UABWC season. Additionally, our Finance, Public Relations and By-laws Committees have served to keep our finances streamlined, our members informed through the yearbook and newsletters and our board meetings orderly. Sincere thanks from the Board to our committee members for making this a successful year for all. For the UABWC to continue to have a positive impact within the UAB community and to provide a valuable experience for our membership, we are dependent on the active involvement of our members. Consider serving on one of committees for next year and help to guarantee an even more successful 2012-2013 year!

Follow up on Scholarship Recipient
Dr. Betinna Riley
The UAB Women’s Club scholarship recipients have varied backgrounds and educational goals. Each story is truly noteworthy. One of our past recipients, Dr. Bettina Riley, is a wonderful example of how our financial support has helped an individual achieve success.
In 2003, after the loss of her husband, Bettina returned to school and enrolled in the UAB nursing program. She stated that she had received the calling to become a nurse while providing palliative care to her husband. She was soon awarded the UABWC scholarship for the 2004-2005 academic year which helped her achieve her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2005. Motivated to learn more, Bettina decided to continue her nursing studies and went on to complete her doctorate in 2011. She was recently hooded during the December Doctoral Commencement Ceremony and now serves as adjunct faculty at UAB.
Bettina has an outstanding list of awards and honors including:
· UAB School of Nursing Dean’s Award (Graduate Scholar of the Year)
· UAB School of Nursing Outstanding Graduate Student (Doctoral) Award
· Tenet Healthcare Corporation/Brookwood Medical Center Clinical Innovation Award
· Sigma Theta Tau, Nu chapter, Dissertation Research Award
In addition, Bettina has also held positions in professional societies including the Alabama Academy of Science, Association of Psychiatric Nurses, Southern Nursing Research Society, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the UAB Health Corps.
Bettina is very thankful for the UABWC scholarship. This scholarship enabled her to return to school after the loss of her husband and to realize her goal of making a difference in other peoples’ lives.
Best wishes for continued success, Dr. Riley!
